i tried to explain to y'all that fweely elected governments constantly infringe rights by passing laws on speed limits and picking up dog poop...but some reason y'all seem to think perfectly reasonable measures to combat a deadly epidemic that has killed millions constitute oppression AND tyranny...and y'all have been ginning up the outrage mills with stories about Australia killing puppies and mauling old people for daring to sit on a park bench

I know that speaking up against the "perfectly rational" Vlad the Bad (aka our great ally against the Cosmopolitans of Davos) does not come naturally for some around here. Just give it a try. One little post now and then. It can be therapeutic.

Next time his thugs maul some poor soul in Russia inhale deeply and make a post about oppression AND tyranny. That's what this thread is all about.

And try not to say that Trudeau is a tyrant too. When you do that all it does is cost you credibility in the fight against actual oppression AND tyranny.

The world has enough actual oppression AND tyranny without ginning up faux outrage over the ersatz variety.

He's currently teaming up with china to further detangle Russia from dollars and western financial systems. That is objectively bad

The western governments have turned into mini Putins using COVID as the pretext to do so. They will continue to get worse

Lafayette Park, where not a soul was arrested, was oppression and tyranny.

But Canada, where hundreds were arrested, assaulted, and had their financial accounts frozen, is NOT oppression and tyranny.

Do I have that right? I'd love to hear you confirm that one

i don't think i've used the magic words oppression AND tyranny with respect to Lafayette Park. I think words like that apply to what is happening in Putin's Russia. But I do think what happened in Lafayette Park is an example of the American government using military helicopters to abridge the rights of people to assemble and voice their concerns in a peaceful way.
 
When I lived in Oakland there was a group of activists that from time to time would walk onto a busy highway at rush hour. Is this legitimate protest? Well I think protesters are entitled to make the rest of us somewhat uncomfortable to make their point. The word somewhat is doing a lot of work there. If they shut down traffic for half an hour I'd be inclined to let them have their say. If they do it day after day for hours I'd side more with the motorists they were inconveniencing. Freedom of expression is not an absolute. It should be reasonably accommodated, even when imposing a cost on third parties. But reasonable accommodation has its limits. Reasonable people can disagree about where those limits should be. I think that was the case with the truckers in Canada. I have a view about where the line should have been drawn. But I wouldn't say people on either side of that line were crazy. It is a policy choice for the Canadian government to make. Like the authorities in Oakland had to decide when to clear the protesters from the highway so people could drive home.

i haven't expressed a view on what the Canadian government did...i don't think it was oppression AND tyranny...maybe fake or ersatz oppression AND tyranny....but that doesn't mean I thought it was handled well or that i agree with the particulars
 
It would be difficult to spot the difference between this and police demanding to see vaccine proof.

One is approved by the academic class. The other is condemned.
