I have full confidence AA will get us to where we need to be. That said, its totally reasonable without being perceived as overreacting to have concerns on the current roster. At the end of the day we were only an 88 win team last year and were below 500 for more days than above 500.
-We currently have a 3 man rotation with significant unknowns for our 4-5 starters; and even with our 1-3, Anderson has still not pitched a full-season and Morton is another year older and coming off an injury
-Our pen is still pretty reliant on 3-4 guys that had extensive work-loads last year. Smith is still probably average at best for a closer despite his amazing post-season
-Acuna will likely miss at least 20-30 games (and even when we had him last year its not like that alone made us a great team)
-Its looking like we may very well lose EACH of Soler, Peterson and Rosario
-We are really banking on Riley not taking any step back next year
-I would have to imagine our bench is amongst the worst in baseball. Putting aside catcher, we don't have a single replacement level player on our bench. Any single injury could be devastating
-Between our outfield / DH, we are still missing a bat that is critically needed
As it stands this is an incomplete team with several rotation holes, a top-heavy bullpen, zero bench to sustain injuries, no DH (or if Ozuna DH"s then no left fielder), and we are losing Freeman away from our offense taking an even bigger hit. Now clearly we have money to spend and this team is nowhere near finished. But its also fair to have concerns that spring training has started and every component of our team is incomplete. Even with freeman back, I'd argue this is at best a 90 win team that still needs significant upgrade. With all this focus on our offense, I'd argue our rotation is still a significant glaring hole that needs another reliable starter.
Fortunately we are still the WS champs and this year is all gravy. But also think we shouldn't let the WS fool us into thinking the team as currently constructed is a great team.
