Legal/scotus thread

Absolute embarrassment that we have someone sitting on the courts that doesn't think child rape/torture is a serious issue that deserves the highest level of condemnation.

There will be a MASSIVE backlash to this and the Democrats will rue the day they put this monster on the court.

This is still a pretty absurd interpretation of the issue. The National Review(!) published a solid article outlining why this was a flawed argument.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2022...t-judge-jacksons-record-on-child-pornography/

I think it’s worth a read for a conservative view point on the issue.

these allegations are disturbing but i don't think they indicate any sort of general proclivity among republicans to mistreat women, staffers and booze

I've read it. The National Review is the old guard.

They are irrelevant moving forward.

What is your counter to the actual argument, though? The way I’ve looked at the specific issue is similar to what would happen if somehow drugs were magically available on the internet to download. Current possession laws scale up based on how much you have to an extreme level because of the likelihood that the person with more is involved either in production or distribution of the drugs. This is parallel to how child pornography worked in the past. However, you would quickly see that if drugs could be downloaded at little to no cost that you’d have people with cartel-level amounts on hand that had nothing to do with the creation of the drugs. That is closer to the current, awful landscape of child porn now and the laws simply haven’t caught up. The fact that this has been described as mainstream and you have ideological opponents that know the laws and sentencing guidelines sticking their neck out for her makes the whole attack seem crazy to me.

I know nothing about the substance of that graphic and thus have no basis for an opinion but I absolutely loathe Occupy Democrats and anyone else who uses things like "Like this if you support the investigation." It's how you would expect high schoolers to post about politics.

You aren't going to like my counter argument because my counter is that I don't give a **** about any of that rationale. Anything that supports the torture and raping of children should be met with the harshest of punishments. It should be more strict than it is now and I don't care for any argument otherwise. I'm driven by morale code and not some court room dancing to get some pathetic degenerate loser out of jailtime that they deserve.

True. Using one person's peccadillos for such purposes is abhorrent.

Fair enough. It doesn’t change the fact that Judge Jackson’s record on these cases is not nearly the controversy some are making it out to be, but I can accept individuals taking a strong position on it.

Pages like that are slacktivism at their laziest. ONe of the countless reasons I left facebook. Was lazy slacktivism "Like this post if you support out troops, like this post if you believe black lives matter, like this post if you like beer" it's all pointless and does nothing but perpetuate the echo chambers people wind up in.

Slaves hoped to get purveyors of child rape and torture off earlier than they should be?

This nomination is going to be so toxic.

Just like the 2020 steal it had to happen to get the country right.

She will be just like Breyer and just rule left on every issue like a ****ing moron.

Notice how the right doesn't have a national meltdown of epic proportions with mass protests and mental illness?

They have to go to work so no time for that

Can Clarence Thomas just identify as a woman so he can take this identity gold medal that's so important?

this is unfortunate and reprehensible but imo not an indication that such behavior is endemic within Republican circles

It's sad that it took this long.

And it's also sad that people cannot understand how historic this is. And her qualifications were far better than Barrett's who was shoehorned in.

The person who nominated her said she was not qualified if not for her genitals and skin color
