GDT: Braves @ LA Freddies 04/18

Some facts to marinate over:

It’s okay to hate the fact Freddie Freeman is a Dodger
It’s okay to miss Freddie Freeman
It’s okay to realize the Braves are in darn good shape at first with Matt Olson

The sooner all Braves fans realize all of the above, including at least one poster on this thread tonight, the better off.

Go get em tomorrow

I see that Snit bypassed a loaded and extremely deep bullpen to go with Newcomb in a high-leverage spot again, which unshockingly cost the Braves the game.

I'm actually fine with going newcomb when they did. Maybe the better play was use a leverage reliever to get out of the jam, and then bring in newcomb for a clean inning. Whatever though

It absolutely was the better play. Snit is probably riding Newk because he knows he's close to being released and wants to give him every opportunity possible but when the starters aren't going deep yet you signed a number of quality BP arms who can compensate, use them. Especially against known Braves killer Trea Turner. Had the better relief arm gotten out of it, the Braves likely win the game or it's tied in the ninth. Just perplexing ****.

With the SP depth pretty thin there are several intriguing options in the offseason with Manaea, Thor, and Clevinger all FA. Morton is getting older so we will probably make a push for a legit SP in the offseason.

Snitker is convinced that the next game is always going to be closer than the current game and he has to save arms for some hypothetical rather than use them in high leverage situations happening in real time.

Snit doesn’t realize that a win today is just as important as a win in August. You always play to win no matter when it is during the season.

I stopped watching at 6-0, but I noticed snit managed to PH for his RHH platoon guys sometime in the middle innings. So that’s at least a small silver lining.

This is true- he plugged Rosario into the right spot at the right time. However, he let Heredia strike out against Graterol with the tying run on second and two outs rather than pinch hitting Dickerson.

I remain thoroughly convinced that Snit will manage us out of at least one title during this window. And after last year, we can be pretty confident he's not going anywhere any time soon. At least his job is a little easier with the DH, but he's still found a way to leave his mark in the early going.

Snitker is what he is. We have to at least acknowledge he's seemingly grown a bit in his willingness to adapt to the evolving game. He will probably never be what we hope, but at least he's not making every single mistake he used to make.

Not interested in trying to defend Snit - he'll eventually make enough mistakes by the end of the season (even with the DH) to make that impossible - but you can at least follow his logic here, even if you don't agree with it.

We all sit here and Monday Morning Quarterback every single move he makes every night as if each can be viewed in a vacuum. I'm as guilty of it as anyone else. Like it or not, he's right here. If you manage every inning in April like it's the late innings of a World Series game, not only will most of these guys have nothing left in the tank after the break - many of them won't even be available when you need them.

Stay afloat and within reach until Acuna's back playing every day, you have a better feel for whether Wright's a mirage, and you get a feel for whether Harris might be able to help you in the second half and then take the governor off.

That might hold water if anyone in the BP had pitched Sunday. Snit used Elder and Strider to cover all 9 innings, so literally everyone else was available.

Snit ended up using Minter down by 2 runs anyways, so why not use him in the 4th? Why was it ok to use Minter down by 2 in the 6th, but it wasn't ok to use him down by 3 in the 4th with men on base?

Snit quite simply doesn't understand leverage, and can't wrap his head around the 4th inning being the critical inning of a ball game. He should have used Minter in the 4th, and then adjusted based on leverage from there.

Afraid I have to side with Snit when it comes to that one. GIVING Newk a roster spot was a waste of $200K to begin with - going to him for anything other than mop-up innings, especially later in games, would be all but impossible to answer questions from the media about. Use Minter early and then bring Newk in AFTER the offense happens to get you back in the game? No thanks.

The "positive" from last night is that hopefully that this marks the end of the line for Newk - it was clear to anyone watching Snitker's expression how frustrated he was when he answered DOB's question. The part left out of Toscano's above tweet was that he pointed out that having Newk come in and start issuing 4-pitch walks is the issue, not what inning they come in.

Um... minter is only a 7th inning guy when leading.. The old book of baseball tells you that. If you use him in the 4th when the game was still in balance, then who the heck you using in the 7th... come on people. managing is not hard. you just do the samething everytime. 50 years of baseball can't be wrong... right..

No one is asking him to manage like its the late innings of a World Series. It made all the sense in the world to bring in a half decent reliever in the 4th. As Enscheff notes, leverage changes during the course of a game. Use Minter, keep the game 3-0, and see what happens. If the Dodgers score a couple runs, then let Newcomb throw 2+ innings. If the Braves score a couple runs, then stay away from him altogether.

This is the issue with Snit. Consider two scenarios:
3-0 game, 4th inning, runners on second and third, two out, Freeman-Turner-Muncy due up.
3-1 game, 6th inning, no runners on, no outs, Smith-Bellinger-Rios due up.

Snit believes that because the first scenario happens earlier in the game, its lower leverage by default. Therefore he uses Newcomb. In reality, that was a huge moment in the game and we all knew it in real time. I texted a friend as soon as Newcomb came in saying "why is Snit risking giving up the game by bringing Newcomb in to face Freeman when we are still within reach?" That isn't Monday Morning Quarterbacking, its a manager who has no comprehension of leverage.
