The number of deaths involving alcohol increased between 2019 and 2020 from 78,927 to 99,017. An increase of 20,090.
The number of deaths in the United States attributed to covid so far is about 1 million. Almost half a million per year since the onset of covid.
Public policy should be geared to reduce all sources of death. Policy should also take into account tradeoffs where mitigation in one category might increase deaths in another. This is common sense. Some of the measures taken to mitigate covid probably did increase deaths from alcohol.
It should also be noted that some of the increase was probably not due to covid-mitigation measures. Alcohol abuse probably increased in part due to the trauma of family members getting sick and dying from covid.
My neighbor lost both parents in 2020. His mother died of covid. Then his father died, not of covid but the trauma of his wife's death probably accelerated his own death. My neighbor is depressed and has put on an enormous amount of weight. The amount of empty vodka bottles (and other forms of hard liquor) in his recycling bin is alarming. Is he a victim of covid or a victim of covid-mitigation measures?
