I’m going to veer way off here and point out that I think this *could* be a positive thing. The amount of actual good being done by our military is pretty limited right now, so a reduction in troops would be fine. However I have little to no confidence in our military to reallocate the troops toward positive ends, so it probably won’t turn out well.

I ultimately think with our technological and geographical advantages that there are almost no circumstances where we wouldn’t be able to protect ourselves effectively for long enough to sort the rest out.

Recruitment usually drops during economic good times. We've had a nice stretch of good economic times. Once the recession really bites we'll probably see recruitment jump.

Replace "military" with Navy, Air Force, and Space Force, and I'll agree with you. A large Army and Marine Corps is just a temptation to put troops in places we shouldn't. Sea, land, and space are the places to practice deterrence and punitive attacks.
These two polls don’t really show much of anything given that it was already known by anybody paying even the slightest bit of attention that this exact ruling was coming.
That said, I’ve been very skeptical of the notion that the SCOTUS decision would be a good political driver for the Dems, *even if* the ruling was very unpopular. The issue I see for the Dems in this is that they control both houses and the WH, and yet this is happening on their watch and they’re doing nothing to impact it. That doesn’t translate to further success at the ballot box if what you’re telling your base is that you just have to vote again, but this time it’ll be different!
I don’t agree with this unless you think America is basically in a constant state of showing weakness. The countries invading and fighting may change a lot, but the world is in an endless state of war. I believe it was actually you that made a point I agreed with that our focus on Ukraine vs. a country like Yemen is ****ed up. We disagreed on what that meant, but these territorial and ethnic disputes are all over the place. I don’t think the US being perceived as weak is entering the equation much.
