The Trump Presidency

Makes a lot of sense. Trump ensures the turnout and wins his third consecutive landslide while Desantis gets some needed seasoning and goes gang busters into his 8 years starting in 28.

Why would DeSantis do that when he’s going to win the nomination outright?

His moment is right now while Covid is in the minds of people. 6 years is forever in politics.

Desantis should run and the best person that convinces the most voters should win out. There is no question about that.

Trump will be 78 during the next Presidential election. That's the same age Biden was when he won. Can we please stop electing men in their late 70s? Cognitive decline is more than pithy comments aimed at political opponents at that age, it's a real problem. It's highly likely that both Biden and Trump are well into cognitive decline right now.

100%

Not that polls are all that meaningful but the latest Emerson poll of possible candidates for the GOP nomination:

Trump 55%
DeSantis 20%
Pence 9%
Haley 3%

Some other recent ones

Politico/Morning Consult (6/24-6/26)
Trump 51%
DeSantis 23
Pence 8

Harvard/Harris (from May)
Trump 41
DeSantis 12
Pence 7

IBD/TIPP (April)
Trump 49
DeSantis 15
Pence 13

It seems to me that those within the GOP wanting a non-Trump nominee must be keeping their fingers crossed and hoping for the legal system to come in as some sort of deus ex machina.

Trump is popular bc his results.on the field were the best of our lifetimes

And his successor has been the worst of our lifetime

Give me DeSantis all day but you're naive to be surprised at trump popularity

The country is literally crumbling before our eyes... We are in a recession... Inflation is at record levels. There are nationwide food shortages

And leftist are talking about an 18 month old protest in which the only person killed was an unarmed woman at the hands of the state

"Why aren't people as obsessed with this as we are??" Says the academics

Don’t forget losing a proxy war with Russia and telling the fossil fuel industry to kick rocks two years ago but now telling them to increase everything because we need it now

And also- create 10,000 genders and ramp up civil discourse

Even though he was president at the time, it is unfair of you to blame very poorly chosen one for the sharp decline in domestic energy production that took place in 2020. That happened because of the collapse in demand and sharp drop in prices.

That's bad and all but did you hear that trump threw his lunch at the wall??!

To see what is in front of our noses is a constant challenge, and perhaps never more so in a time of such awful post-truth polarization. But what happened in the January 6 hearings this past week will, in my view, be seen one day as a watershed moment either in the history of this country’s revival as a liberal democracy or in this republic’s rapid collapse.

Two women, Liz Cheney and Cassidy Hutchinson, went back and forth, asking and answering questions, slowly, calmly, and methodically laying out a story of an actual attempt by a president of the United States to rally and lead an armed mob to assault the Congress to overturn an election. Yes, I just wrote that sentence.

Hutchinson’s testimony added critical facts to the record: that Trump knew full well what the mob was intending to do in advance; and knew that they were armed: “You know, I don’t ****ing care that they have weapons. They’re not there to hurt me.” He knew what he was attempting was criminal; tried physically to lead the mob in their rampage; and when he was foiled, egged on the attack, and refused to quiet or quell the mob for hours — even as it threatened to kill his own vice president. There is no way now to deny that Trump was behind all of it, uniquely responsible.

On this July 4, I just want to say as a naturalized American, that the courage and integrity of these Republican women give me hope. They have put their country before their party and the Constitution before a mob leader. They may be our last best hope that this republic, the rule of law, and the simple truth will survive us.

God bless them. And God save America.
