Updated Roster news/thoughts

This would likely mean Gearrin, Varvaro and Mejia are all in danger of losing their 40-man roster spots. Of course one or two of them could be traded soon too. It just depends on what they decide on the final bullpen spots, etc.

I see it as a good reason to just go with Mejia at the bat position for 25th-man until Pastornicky is ready.

I see the bench shaking out as Laird, Pena, Doumit, Schafer and Rev. The last bullpen spot is not on this team right now.

I think Schlosser has earned a spot unless they want to keep him starting in the minors as depth (not a bad idea). At this point, I would prefer to see Gearrin and Varvaro traded/released.

I would keep Gearrin as a ROOGY. Has held righties to a .604 OPS during his ML career.

I wouldn't be against him being the 8th man until Santana debuts, but the guy has been dreadful. Would rather give Rodriguez a chance. He pitched really well.

Guys like Gearrin and Varvaro, while decent pitchers, are expendable. If you lose them, you aren't losing much, so I wouldn't put them on the 25 man roster over someone else more deserving just because they are out of options.

I would keep Gearrin too, he's proven to be a good reliever if used correctly. The problem is Fredi has never used him properly and even then he did well last year before the abuse got extreme (as you've correctly noted a number of times of course).

Just said on TV that Pastornicky "feels great". He may be ready come opening day. If healthy, he's the 25th man., IMO.

Garcia is probably pitching for a job tomorrow. I have a feeling if he stinks it up they'll go with Schlosser instead in the rotation.

Jose Mijares would not be a bad guy to pick up as a LOOGY. Has put up FIP of 1.92 and 2.31 against lefties the last two seasons.

He is worth considering. Plus Lefty Luis Perez, let go by the Blue Jays, has 8 teams already interested in him. I am pretty sure we're one of those teams.

It now looks like the bench will be: Laird, Doumit, Schafer, Pena, Pastornicky. Pretty much what I expected, though the delay in Pastornicky's recovery created some uncertainty for a while. It is a positionally versatile group, with good righty-lefty balance as far as pinch hitting goes.

Starting rotation will initially be: Teheran, Wood, Hale, Harang.

Pen: Kimbrel, Walden, Carpenter, Avilan, Gearrin, Varvaro, Thomas and Schlosser.

Schlosser will probably be get sent down when Santana is ready.

The pen is a solid group. The key will be Fredi using the guys with significant platoon splits in the right way and distributing the work load properly. Given what has happened to the starting rotation, I think the pen will get a relatively heavy workload in April.

An important position that is little appreciated is the bullpen role I call Sacrificial Lamb. As the name suggests this is the guy who gets sacrificed in certain circumstances so that the more important bullpen guys save their arms. Varvaro is the logical candidate for this position right now. Hopefully, Fredi figures it all out.

We don't have that long guy in that pen. Heavy workload to start is what I see. There is no Christhian Martinez to come in and throw 3 IP to get us to the rest of the pen if someone has a bad day.

He offers zero position flexibility but I'd like to see Mejia get a chance at PH duties. Guy has swung a hot bat this spring and has some legit power.

Varvaro had 17 multi-inning appearances last year. Fredi also used Avilan, Gearrin and Carpenter to pitch multiple innings last year. And Thomas was a starter part of last season. The key will be distributing the load properly and using guys in roles that maximize their effectiveness. I think we have a well-balanced pen.
