Minor league thread

that would be a great outcome for him and us.

Difference is Ian throws 95. Seems like when Ian isn't throwing 95 he gets hit a lot more.

In today's game we know there is more than that. Ian has the tunneling advantage but also has a very straight FB. We do not know if Shuster has life on the FB or any tunneling or deception to make it play up.

I also think Shuster's third pitch, slider is considered better than Ian's third pitch. That said, I haven't seen anyone say the shuster slider is more than potential avg, nobody is expecting a dominant pitch.

One of Anderson's problems is the relatively small difference in velocity between his fastball and change. His changeup averages 88 MPH. When Anderson's fastball is at 95, there's just enough difference in speed to get swings and misses. When Anderson's fastball is at 93, you see a lot more ability to adjust and make contact on the change. At best you have a 7 MPH delta with Anderson. When it's 5 MPH he gets into trouble.

Shuster's changeup is legit. It comes in about 80 mph that the bottom falls out of as it reaches the plate. Some reports have his fastball at 92-94 which probably means it's more 90-91 on a big league gun. So you're talking about a delta of 11 MPH.

It's hard to say what Shuster will become. If he can get his fastball up to sitting at 94 like the Braves hoped when they drafted him then with an average slider we could have something. If his fastball sits at 90-91 then his slider will need to be better. I could see him moving to the pen if his stuff doesn't work out as a starter.

There may not be much more, if any, velocity to come out of Shuster, whose fastball has sat in the high-80s to low-90s range since he left Wake Forest in 2020. But his quality changeup and promising curveball should continue to be a difference-maker as he climbs the top rungs of the Braves’ organizational ladder. He pitches with deception and is doing a commendable job of limiting line drives and home runs. Shuster may be a little underwhelming for a first-round pick but he’s not likely to be a flop, with scouts giving him a ceiling of a back-end starter. “He’s going to get there,” said one scout of the left-hander. “He’s just not going to be special.”

low first round pick being a solid 4th starter is an ok outcome....not sure we get there, but a lot of people think so.

I have a suspicion Shuster wont pitch for Atlanta. Not because he doesn't make it to the majors but because I think he might end up as a trade chip since we don't have a ton of decent trade pieces.

So exactly the type of guy they need to trade for someone like Happ. The Braves don’t need to fill holes on the roster with 1-2 win players right now. They have the cash to buy those players whenever they need one.

I'd move shuster over muller. Shuster is more likely to be a solid 5th starter. But Muller has better stuff and more likely to be an impact pen piece when he likely fails out of starting.

I'd really like Happ.

Still can't believe we gave Rosario 2 years. That's going to be a problem. Rosario and Ozuna might be the dead weight next year.

If Muller’s control improvement is real this year, he needs to stay a starter.

I don't think it would be a bad idea to give strider a 10-day IL trip and give muller a start. Strider would get a long break, and he'd be good to go after AS break

i'm happy to be wrong on muller, but I don't think he can repeat his delivery enough.

I'd like to see him in the strider bullpen role and see if he can build some confidence and/or value.

I think the issue is that we have smith, Minter and Maztek so there are a lot of LH. I could see him as the Smith replacement next year if we are moving money to SS and/or LF.

Shuster and Davidson looks like a pretty nice offer for Happ and Givens, no?

Vaughn Grissom homered in his first at bat today.

Tarnok also throwing well in his Triple A debut: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K. The run was on a solo homer, and he's back out to the mound for the sixth now.

We may get very lucky again with Grissom. If there is any chance we get another 2-4 win player into the everyday lineup cheap for four years then on boy the window is WIDE OPEN.

I get I am likely over rating Grissom. Not sure where he'd play on the current team w/ a healthy ozzie. Unlikely he's good enough on D to replace Swanson next year.

But in theory, he is a perfect fit for the team. To put in a high OBP guy with some pop into this line up with a ton of POP would be great. I think he would round out the line up if he could hit like he has in the minors. Clearly I know that there is no guarantee, and it is in fact unlikely, that he'll hit in MLB like he does in the minors.

He's the perfect 2 hole hitter.
