2022 MLB Draft Thread

Is this a big deal with Keller being so much over slot?

Not at all. $4.2 million left, and the only signings from the first 10 rounds that haven't been announced are Ritchie, McCabe, and Maier. We know Ritchie's already in town and even if he gets the same thing Murphy did there will still be plenty of money left.

Murphy being so far below slot pretty much locks everyone up.

I mean that as in is Keller a great overslot guy and getting him to sign as a 6th rounder a big deal.

Wow I was not expecting Murphy to sign under slot that much

I have no idea of knowing, but I thought the savings would be around $1 MM. But I also thought they'd have to use a lot of that on Phillips. I good chunk of the savings on Murphy and Burkhalter will probably be going to Richie and Maier (and some has already gone to Alvarez and Keller). Surprised on Alvarez, but they scout them and I don't. I was out of town and was unable to follow the Day 3 picks, but there doesn't seem to be any picks with the 2019 draft vibe.

Callis:

Supplemental 1st-rd pick J.R. Ritchie signs with @Braves for $2.4 million (slot 34 value = $2,203,200). Washington HS RHP, 93-97 mph fastball, three promising secondary pitches, good athleticism. UCLA recruit. @MLBDraft

In the top 10, I think we are just waiting on McCabe and Maier.

Correct.

And here’s the big overslot. From baseball America:

The #Braves signed seventh round RHP Adam Maier for $1,197,500. Slot value for pick No. 215 is $215,400. A $982,100 over slot deal.

They must feel really strongly about that elite-spin breaking stuff.

Counting the 5% overage that leaves $603,380 for McCabe and any + $100K signings from the later rounds.

Signing Maier is huge. Me might have the best secondary stuff in the draft and even though he's a college pitcher, Canada's COVID restrictions means he has very few collegiate innings. So there's probably even more polishing that can be done than your run of the mill college pitcher.

Any reason to think McCabe needs a big bonus? We could pay the two high school kids at the end of the draft 4th round money, right?

If McCabe signs for slot, that would leave $124,480 for signings beyond the 10th round - 7th round money (slot for Maier was $215,400).

Noah Williams (18th round) already tweeted he was going to school. I'd imagine that's probably enough to buy Christian Jackson out of his Georgia State commitment, yes.

4th year Junior so he can still go back to college, but I have a hard time thinking he's going to get more money as a 5th year Senior. Still, Baldwin signed for above slot and that surprised me.

We may not know about the post-Round 10 guys until their names shows up in a FCL box score.

Interesting draft. I don't know how much other teams are dedicated to the metrics, but it appears the Braves tilted in that direction with a few guys. I like Keller, but I wonder about his long-term durability given his size. He's young, so there's probably some physical development coming, but he's short (and I'm old school).

Speaking of which, Justin Janas signed for slot:

Interesting prospect, given the round. I'm betting the Braves think they can add some loft/power to his swing.

Maybe it's that they are both from Illinois, but the first guy I thought of when I read Janas' bio was former Braves' minor leaguer (and Twins, Marlins, Yankees and Pirates major leaguer) Garrett Jones. Jones never got above rookie league ball for the Braves and showed very little power, but somehow the power came under the Twins' tutelage and he managed to hit 122 HRs in the majors.

Pretty huge that they were able to nab Christian Jackson, especially without any overage. He boasts some pretty great inputs for his age, and—as aforementioned—is from the same town as MHII (which, who knows, might've helped pull him away from Georgia State).

Didn't realize Kilpatrick is also from Stockbridge. The Braves really, uh, stocking up on players from that town.
