2022 MLB Draft Thread

Quite sure it's far from anything to worry about, but always hate it when ONE of the kids taken in the first ten rounds drags things out.

After paying extra for Mejia, Kilpatrick, and Jackson, they're down to $528,380 left to spend. Sitting around waiting to hear about a bat-first 1B-only guy who has enough leverage to completely ruin what feels like such a good draft drives me nuts. Especially when when Olson's locked up for longer than McCabe's career is likely going to last.

Why? We already signed all the big guys except for Noah who already said he was going to college anyways.

Because if McCabe decides he's worth substantially more than Alvarez the money isn't there to sign him.

That $528,380 is including the 5% overage - there's no more to spend when they get to that point without giving up a pick.

Eh... not really a big deal

I said it's likely nothing to worry about. Just don't like giving that kind of leverage to a player - particularly one you don't really need - by spending the extra money on the kids taken in rounds 11-20 BEFORE you've taken care of business first.

McCabe's slot, even with the 5%, would still leave us with like $25K to spend on the later round guys above the normal bonuses, right?

For every dollar McCabe comes in under slot plus 5%, that's an extra dollar to spend on the later rounds?

Assuming the above is correct... and assuming the Braves and McCabe are discussing an underslot deal... don't the Braves need to try to reach deals with everyone of the later guys prior to finalizing McCabe so they don't end up a few dollars short?

No.

If anyone selected in the first 10 rounds isn't signed without going more than 5% over your total pool you HAVE TO meet their asking price or re-work all the other deals.

Again, there's not much chance they backed themselves into a corner where that happens. However, in the event McCabe decides he wants $600K or he's going back to school they run the risk of either having to give it to him or have this draft blow up in their faces. The $75K extra they spent on the guys taken in 12th, 17th, and 19th rounds means they can't meet that $600K asking price if he puts it out there.

I don't think it's much of a concern - I just hate giving a player you drafted in the 7th round that kind of leverage.

That's a bit extreme lol

What leverage he thinks he has in this scenario is overwhelmed by the fact that he wouldn’t sniff close to that signing bonus next year. And his agent isn’t going to accept the hit to his reputation for a late round draftee.

Seriously, you pull this anxiety routine every year. Aren't you tired of it yet?

They didn’t pay those guys extra; slot for 11-20 is $125k, so the pool is unaffected.

Accounting for the 5% permissible overage, the team has just over $600k in the pool left, with all money up to $125k for 11-20 not counting against that pool.

Missed the bump to $125K in the later rounds for this draft - you're right.

Given that it’s exactly $2500 under slot, and that’s the pool-cost of each of picks 8, 9, & 10, I’m guessing the remaining ~$130k of pool space is pretty precisely earmarked for the remaining unsigned players.
