Around the Majors - 2022 Version

Yea, I'm mostly joking. I think, given this platform season, he's going to cash in mightily—and he's already rejected a seven-year, $213.5 million contract extension, so we know he's eying well in excess of those numbers. But a long-term deal for him, as a thirty-year-old with a large frame and some history of leg injuries, just seems really ill-advised, if not downright frightening. Honestly, it's hard to imagine any team but the Yankees shelling out—especially since they can always buy their way out of the contract later—but even they have some risk aversion these days.

He grew up a Giants fan—maybe they sign him to something like eight years and $250m and try to bring some star power back to the Bay.

I think Passan said watch out for the Giants on Judge if he gets to test the market. They have tons of payroll flexibility, it is hard to see the Yankees not keep him but every team has their number and it only takes one team to make an insane offer that the Yankees wont match. Given Judge's past injuries and his size, a long-term deal for him in his 30's is very very risky. Yankees probably end up keeping him but if he hits the market, all bets are off.

Giants seem like an obvious fit. If they're smart, they'll unload Rodón and Pederson for near-MLB young talent, then go into the off-season reloaded and with money to spend.

Yankees would probably be smart to let him walk but thing is, there's not many outfielders in free agency. They are the Yankees so they can probably trade him off if the contract ages poorly. Even the Yankees are a bit prudent on contracts, so i'm not sure how high they'll go to keep Judge.

It's too bad the Zombie Expos are so bad at pitching. Scherzer didn't bring his a-game, but a 4-3 Mets lead quickly ballooned back to a 7-3 margin.

could the Phillies be dumb enough to try and extend Alec Bohm based on his Chris Johnson July? they tried to be smart and played that game with Kingery. could do it again.

Kingery wasn't a huge contract.. but is that kid even around anymore?

size of the contract isn’t really the point. the Kingery deal still ended poorly for them (think this is the last year of it) and they probably buy into Bohm 100% so might give him more to try and get him extended long term. i’m mostly being facetious but it is the phillies.

nope, they owe him 8.25 next year and 1 million to buy out the remaining 3 team options. yes it was a dumb contract to give to a guy having success in AAA..

Kingery contract goes through 2023 without options. Runs through 2026 with team/player options. Team option at $13 MM for 2024 and unless the heavens part, I don't see the Phils picking that up and instead just forking over the $1 MM buyout. Hard to know what happened to Kingery. I know he got hurt in 2021 (and have a rough bout of COVID in 2020), but he just fell apart. Isn't even on the Phils' 40-man anymore.

Bohm has an extremely limited ceiling, but a fairly reasonable floor. His contact profile suggests that he should be able to sustain a higher BABIP.

But he’s the exact player you take year to year and not hesitate to cut once he starts making real money in arbitration.

has no power and isn’t good defensively. he’s underperformed his xwOBA two years now - is that something that will happen when a player has a lack of power?

in any case, i doubt he can maintain a .351 BABIP. when it was at .327 last year he was garbage. i don’t like him much at all.

His xWOBA has been > 330 the last two years. He makes hard contact (, so adjustments to increase launch angle could unlock some power. The defensive limitations are obviously very real and don’t look like they are correctable (based on the eye test at least).

I think he will settle in that wRC+ 100-110 range that gives back most of his value from his defense. That type of production is fine when he’s making less than $7m.

his contact is fine but not amazing or anything. and again, he’s underperformed those xwOBA and i wonder if it’s because he lacks power. his max EV is like 86th in the league. his average and hard hit% are better but it’s not like they’re really good. think he’ll need to hit for more power to settle in there as i don’t see a .351 BABIP holding up for very long.

besides my point wasn’t to explicitly **** on Alec Bohm, but the phillies and their decision-making.

Former Braves' farmhand Joey Meneses makes his major league debut tonight in Washington playing first base and batting sixth for the Nationals.
