Braves sign Strider!!! 6 years 75M (22M Club Option 29')

Have to think Fried has turned down numerous offers at this point and probably wants to go back to LA.

Sucks but this is incredible news.
 
With the way the extensions are rolling out, I don't think we gonna see fried and Swanson once theirs runs out.
 
Lol the original tweet says "six year contract worth $75". Pretty cheap deal!

This type of deal definitely comes with some risk, obviously.
 
Wow. They clearly recognize the talent level with Strider. Obviously pitchers carry a lot of risk, but Strider could easily be a top 5 pitcher in baseball over the next several years. And gives us 2 extra control years on the back end.
 
Oh wow. There’s risk here, but Strider really takes care of his body and he’d play as an expensive closer if he stopped making it through the lineup more than once.

The key to extensions is getting them in pre-arb before you’ve made 8 figures a year.

I hope we extend both, but if it’s at retail then we may lose them.
 
Good deal for both. Braves take some risk but if things go well they get Strider at a bargain. Strider gives up some earning potential but also reduces his risk. Everyone gets something, everyone gives up something.

Fried probably just knows his worth and isn't willing to sign a below market deal so close to FA. I have zero doubt he'd accept a 7/150 extension (or somewhere thereabouts) if offered. Braves probably want something more in the the 5/90 range with a couple of option years.

The Braves are assuming a lot of risk to sign a TOR to a 2/44 million contract.

It’s a lot of risk to assume to be sure. This is probably the gutsiest signing AA has done so far.
 
Even if we went year to year and Strider got hurt I doubt the Braves would DFA him. He has too much high level talent to let him go so I see his arb years as almost guaranteed anyway.

The Braves did well to keep the years short enough to only guarantee thru age 30.
 
Hm...personally, I would have liked to see a bit more from Strider before handing him a long-term contract. In my opinion, a lot will need to go right for those '28 and '29 seasons to be a major bargain. He strikes me as a guy with a high but short peak that will fall into his controlled years anyway. And chances are that 1-2 of those years will be lost to TJS.
OTOH, if they feel he's that special, they should have bought out more of his FA years.

Unless he falls off a cliff next year he will return the majority of value of the contract by the end of next year when considering also this past year (excluding 29 team option). Understand its silly to bake in a prior year but Strider has already generated tremendous value to the club.
 
If the Braves gave Max Fried this contract after his rookie year, it would have been awesome.

If the Braves did this with Soroka, the deal would have been awful.

Soroka was by far the least risky from both a health and performance perspective. That’s the risk with pitchers.

Fried only had blister issues. There was never real injury concerns with him. Elbow surgery is almost a non-factor now early in a career.
 
Pitchers are risky but Strider is absolutely the one you take a risk on. Max Fried is my dude, he's our ace and big-game baller but Strider is easily our most talented and is probably as good, if not better than Max for a while.

Since Strider will finish top-2 in ROY voting, the Braves were going to lose a year of control so this buys out three free-agent years, I believe.

I understand that. And I also understand that the contract is not expensive compared to the value he can be reasonably expected to return. But sometimes, there are players with whom it may be wise to just ride out the 6 years of control and evaluate his trajectory. Don't get me wrong, I love Strider, and enjoy having a truly dominant starter. But I wonder if he doesn't fall into this category.
