Official official offseason thread

With all of these potential names being thrown around for us to sign, I still really don't think we have as much to spend as most on here assume we do. We will see.

I mean, i dont think we have enough to sign like Diaz, Verlander, a shortstop, and Judge. But i think AA has enough to make one splash which he normally does in free agency. And i dont think he'd pickup Morton's option if we were short on money. McGuirk has said he wants us to have a top 5 payroll.

Also depends as someone said above if we can get rid of Ozuna, Rosario's contracts. I might keep Pina, he makes 4.5, and 4 the next 2 years. And catching is ****ing awful around baseball.

I think most likely is getting one of the top shortstops, and some bullpen depth, thats really all we need. And see if you can move Ozuna or Eddie.

Just read a snippet that the Dodgers may be in on Judge with the intention of moving Betts to 2B. Betts was a 2B in the minors and I would be curious if he could go back their effectively after so many years in the OF and it's a little odd that the Dodgers would move beyond Lux so quickly. Dodgers signing Judge may indicate they are willing to move on from Turner, but who knows.

I hope we don't have to play a waiting game until February for the dust to settle, but it's all going to depend on where the big timber decides where to fall. Second-tier options are likely to wait until Judge, Correa, Turner are off the board.

AA and Swanson both know where each side stands. Right now Swanson wants to see if somebody will top it so he can go back to AA with a higher offer. AA has to let Dansby know you have x amount of time before I have to move on, example: Freddie Freeman. I’d still rather pay more for Correa.

But getting one of the top shortstops is likely going to push us to the luxury tax. Are we really thinking the organization is willing to go there? Plus this organization is never the highest bidder on the big name free agents. I can't see it being different this time.

Also remember each of the past off seasons where we assumed after AA signed people like Smyly early that it meant we had a lot of money to spend, and that simply wasn't the case?

I'll be prepared to be surprised here.

McGuirk has said we want to be a top 5 payroll team. Our payroll's at like 185 or so after arb, so i think we have no choice but to dip into the tax. Also have alot of money off the books in 23-24, so it wouldnt be a repeater situation. I think the tax is like 233, so we'd have to spend wisely to stay under that mark.

I'm not saying we'll sign like 5 big name guys but one of the shortstops and a bullpen arm is about all we need to do. Also depends if we can move Ozuna or Rosario to shed some money.

I'm not sure we'll be in on Turner or Correa but there's a ton of money off the books in the next couple years, and we gotta take advantage of these team friendly contracts somehow. I think most likely scenario is getting Dansby back but i would not rule out a Turner or Correa signing at all.

did you not read the article about the tax. We have like 17 million left to spend to not hit the tax. With the core signed, the average annual salary is used for cap tax. So even if guys are making 1-2 million this year but make more the latter years, the tax obligation will be the average. So we are at like 217 million already against the cap threshold. Now if Odor goes away, and we can get rid of Bozuna, then we might have a shot at staying under.

I think Odo opts out, and two, i'd be surprised if all we have left is 17. That's nothing to add what we need. And i think AA will try hard as hell to move on from Ozuna.

Was listening to a podcast with Bowman. He said Dansby is in charge of the deal, even though he and Freddie have the same agent. Think that's a little interesting, but if Braves are offering 5/120ish and he gets 6/150-160+ elsewhere, whew.

I wasn't saying that is all they have left to spend. I was saying that is all they have left before they hit the tax threshold of 233. The Braves will go over the threshold unless they get rid of some bad contracts.

I doubt they get full savings if they move Ozuna and Rosario. My guess is that they will have to send money along with either of those two or attach prospect(s). Rosario would be easier to move because he's only owed $9 MM through 2023 with a team option at the same amount for 2024.

Ozuna is $18 MM in each of the next two seasons with a team option year after that. That would be a pretty hefty commitment that a team couldn't shed for two seasons. I suppose a team that wants a guy who would want someone solely to DH may be interested, but I still think we'd have to send $5 MM to $10 MM along with him attach a mid-tier prospect. It would still free up some room, which would obviously be welcome.

agree that we would have to attach a prospect and probably send cash. He has bad bagage and has been awful the last 2 years. I just don't see anyone wanting to touch him.

Probably way off base here, but I wonder if we made a run at, say, Reynolds from Pittsburgh, and we had to attach a heavy return anyway, could we also kick in Ozuna and cash? Pittsburgh probably won't want to risk being stuck with him, but if he could rebound a little, they could flip him at the deadline.

Boston and Colorado also seem like teams that would accept him in a trade. Not sure what we would get back, but we have to upgrade LF somehow and in some way better than a straight platoon.

I could see us wait until the deadline to fix LF. But Rosario/Grossman/Ozuna is not cutting it.

Either way, we can’t really move on anything until there is some direction on Dansby. It’ll be inexcusable if we don’t have what we consider our best offer prepared for him right as free agency starts.

Freddie is a cuck, right?

Well we don't have to wait for FA to start to give him that offer. We can negotiate with him now. I'm sure he knows where we are and i'm sure the Braves know where he wants to be.

I'm curious what the gap is....is it the years? is it the AAV? both?

I dont blame Freddie at all, blame his agent more than him. Freddie would be a Brave if he could re-do it all over again.

I mean cuck in the most literal and endearing way possible.

His agent “cucked” him out of returning to the Braves

Bowman also said we tried to swap Ozuna for Corbin, but Nats said no. I think that says we want Ozuna gone (may even DFA him) and where payroll currently stands.
