I think if the choice is between lockdowns and millions of deaths the cost-benefit favors lockdowns under certain circumstances. But not indefinitely. You need a plan for pivoting away from having to make that choice. There is s reasonable path China should have taken and can still take to avoid being stuck with having to make that choice. It involves vaccinating its population with the better vaccines that are available.

If a democratically elected government takes draconian measures to deal with a deadly contagious disease I wouldn't go around crying tyranny AND oppression. The CCP is a government that practices actual tyranny AND oppression. It's efforts to suppress covid do not strike me as an example of that. When everything gets labeled tyranny AND oppression it diminishes efforts to call out actual tyranny AND oppression. (such as the imprisonment of political opposition like Navalny). If you can't see the difference between China and Australia or between Xi and Putin on the one hand and Trudeau on the other I can't help you and I suspect no one can.
