Official official offseason thread

His point is Rosario and Ozuna have negative value. The Pirates would not be interested in either of them in a package for Reynolds.
We don’t know how pirates value players and what kind of package we are going to offer. Rosario have a 1 year left and we don’t know if AA offer to pay half of the salary.

the price to get Reynolds and attach one of those bats would be really prospect expensive... but it could done I guess.. I guess you could send cash too but it would be a hard sell for the Pirates to take back an anchor like Ozuna. I think they could find better deals that wouldn't involve Ozuna types from other teams.

You have to be careful attaching bad contracts in a trade.. we all still remember the Kimbrell trade

Taking the long view, I always thought we did better than initially expected in that deal. I believe the Competitive Balance pick we got from the Padres turned out to be Austin Riley. Wisler teased us, but he's still drawing a big league paycheck. The only guy the Padres got from when they shipped Kimbrel to Boston who has done much is Manuel Margot. Maybe Allen and Guerra show out, but I've always thought fans dogged our Kimbrel trade too much.

Forget Ozuna and Rosario at this point. They’re both sunk costs. Thankfully Rosario is off the books after this season but we’re still stuck with Ozuna through 2024. Lol I feel like that contract won’t ever expire.

If we want Reynolds then pay whatever the cost is with prospects and leave Ozuna on the bench or cut him. Nobody is trading for him.

He will be on the Braves so you use him as the DH and hope that you can find lightning in a bottle.

My gut tells me we are going to be VERY disappointed this offseason and that Liberty is trying to recoup some kind of financial loss some where within their corporate structure.

Don't disagree regarding being "disappointed" this offseason, but as someone mentioned earlier, a lot of our heavy lifting was done during the season. SS, LF, and/or bullpen are the only areas to address this offseason. Based on the prices, it doesn't make sense to over spend. So I expect Dansby to be gone.

I don't think it has anything to do with Liberty. They have said multiple times they want us to be a top 5 payroll team, and right now, the Braves and the Battery are a cash cow.

When the Pirates won last time the champion 1979?
You know they have the first pick in the draft this upcoming year and they are in a rebuilding mode?

The have interested in Tucker Barnhart..

Barnhart is not going to make that team any better.

Lol… you’re a trip. Imagine thinking the Pirates would take back any payroll for their most valuable asset when they are like a $40 million team.

And then you make a mental note not to give bat-only players long term deals...except you just did that exact thing with the Olson extension. Oh well.

Is your opinion that Olson’s bat is on par with Ozuna’s bat before all the off the field stuff?

Also isn’t Olson historically regarded as a really good to great fielder? This past season he had his defensive issues but he’s always been regarded as a good fielder. Ozuna never was. Not even when he hit his way into a gold glove.

I agree with not overspending but the reality is the prices next year will be higher than they are this year. We don’t have a real internal option at ss. So if we don’t fix it this year, we’ll be right back here next year, but with higher prices, presumably. Maybe the talent won’t be as good as it is this year, but the price per WAR will likely be higher. So the value won’t change. If anything, getting value will be more difficult. I suppose you could try and trade again, but we’re suddenly not going to have more prospects to trade from.
