Official official offseason thread

The Cubs won’t contend this year. They still need a lot of work. I like Happ and wished we could have gotten him at the deadline.

I wonder why? Because the Yanks would have been very upset.

You are quite dense.

The SD contract was clearly designed to stretch the AAV thin enough to help get around the luxury tax thresholds. A contract through his age 44 season is apparently where MLB is going to draw that line.

This true?

Considering they consistently ranked top 3 in prospect rankings throughout much of the past 10 years, this is an incredible fact.

All of that losing and rebuilding to basically have a contention window while Soto is under contract. Oh and the starting pitching is clearly not good enough to compete with the big boys.

I saw it somewhere else too and that’s crazy. Completely bought team. They traded alot for Soto.

I think in fairness (and I think Preller is a goof) there are some second-tier deals (Nola, Cronenworth, Grisham) that need to be incorporated into the discussion. They got Tatis, Jr., in a later-for-now deal from the White Sox for Shields. So, while true that they've spent heavily in the FA market, they've built in other less gaudy ways as well.

We know what Reynolds will bring. That is his benefit. He is good and has a track of being better. WC is an unknown. He could be better than Reynolds. But he is unproven. It would be hard for me to do a one for one swap. I would want to. But not sure I could. Giving up a younger more controlled player is hard.
What about WC is unknown? Defense as a catcher..yeah, but he can hit and needs to bat consistently. I'm still not wanting to trade him, but if they do it'll be what it'll be.

AA is stuck until the SS situation is resolved. If he can sign a SS then he can use Grissom as trade bait for LF.

One year of hitting at MLB level doesn’t make him proven.

Good MLB FOs can project players before they are “proven”. That’s the whole point of modern analytics. Contreras has very promising measurables offensively, and is almost certainly the best DH option on the roster.

Is he too much to pay for Reynolds? The fact folks around here are hesitant to send him to Pittsburgh probably means he’s a fair centerpiece for a package. If AA is dead set on Rosario/Ozuna at DH then flipping Contreras into 3 years of a 3-4 win OFer is a very reasonable move to make. However, I don’t think the Pirates will be trading him for a package centered around Contreras.

Not sure if real or not, but saw something on Facebook that said since Astros missed on Contreras, they could sign 2 of the following: benintendi, Brantley, and conforto.

I'd like one of these guys

Spot on.

The Pirates just used a number one pick on a catcher. Even if they like Contreras and are open to a catcher share role, I imagine they’d prioritize someone else in a trade with a different team.

LMAO..who said that. But just because you think he is easily tradeable doesn't mean he won't be more.

I am only a few post from saying is WC worse than Reynolds. They were very similar last year. I don’t know if I would trade him for Reynolds. That said I don’t think it is wrong to really wonder if WC is as good as he was last year. I remain hopeful but I wouldn’t bet the farm.
