Official official offseason thread

Braves get: Sean Murphy (Oak)

A's get: Manny Pina (Atl), Freddy Tarnok (Atl), Esteury Ruiz (Mil), Kyle Muller (Atl)

Brewers get: William Contreras (Atl), Joel Payamps (Oak), Justin Yeager (Oak)

Even if the Braves don't get anyone else back, it doesn't make sense for the A's to trade Contreras for that little.

If true, what a steal by AA.

Especially since we had catcher solved for at least one more season.

What if Contreras goes out and hits to a 130 wrc+ next season in 500 ABs while managing to not be a complete negative in LF?

I honeslty don't get it. Think its a bad move with the principals discussed already.

The last 3 seasons, only realmuto has more fWAR than Murphy at catcher.

1. JTR 12.6
2. Murphy 10.0
3. Smith 9.7
4. Contreras 7.2

I’m big on Murphy as I think he’s the best defensive catcher in baseball and a top 5 bat.
Saying that, we gave up a young semi all star catcher, a veteran solid backup catcher, at worst a number 5 SP and a RP for him?
Seems there has to be more.
If that is the deal the Brewers really upgraded and has to feel pretty good.

TBH love Contreras bat, but he's likely a DH\backup C.

With the pitch clock and changes, I think you are gonna want a guy back there who can limit the run game.

Murphy is considered more valuable than Contreras?

That doesn't seem right to me.

I like Contreras, but I really think he's a bat only guy. I've been derided for that opinion before, but I don't think there's any way the Braves sign Pina last off-season to a two-year deal if they truly trusted Contreras behind the plate.

A lot of us were conjecturing about Murphy when the possibility first surfaced, but he only makes sense if it was a more complex deal that could line up several teams. I guess we are going to see it unfold.

Oakland’s return seems extremely light. Feels like Milwaukee has another piece or two to give up.
