Official official offseason thread

I'm okay with Arcia/Grissom/Andrus if we can sign Conforto. There's just not a lot left to spend money on that fills our needs.

I know a lot of people are calling for signing Conforto, hut the dude hasn't had an at bat in almost 2 years, and is coming off major shoulder surgery.....with Boras as his agent, he is going to want a 1 year prove it deal at a high amount.

Not quite sure i'm all giddy to get him.

Benintendi would be fine

i'm starting to go all in to the plan of getting hitters for LF and DH and going with Grissom/Arcia at SS.

Maybe we can spread risk and get a Conforto and a Drury. Maybe Profar and Benintindi. Get an upgrade and keep the risk down. If Conforto or one of the guys isn't that good you have a second shot at it. Plus Ozuna and Rosario. One of the 4 hits?

I think Arcia can at least field SS. I think Arcia and Grissom can back up most places. Acuna can back up CF. So we could have a bench of LF/DH guys.

And for depth, we look pretty good. I mostly watch the braves, so maybe some of you who watch more baseball can fill in better:
C-top 5 production
1B-top 10
2B-top 10
SS-2 WAR, maybe 1.5
3B-top 5
LF-BOTTOM 5
CF-Top 5.....maybe he regresses some? Top 10
RF-Top 5
DH-BOTTOM 5

SP: top 10
Pen: top 10, could be top 5

That's a really good team. Probably more impact on improving DH/LF than SS. Probably easier to get someone to take a short term and or less money deal at LF and DH. Maybe Peralta/Drury is a productive pair.

OK, sure.

I don't see any other big moves we are going to make. I don't think AA is going to pay the prices that this market has created. We are still a good team, not saying it in a bad way. I am still very disappointed in that trade, but we will see. I think WC will be as good as Murphy this year personally, but I have been wrong before.

My fear is we sign up to a huge contract and he turns back into the mediocre offensive player he’s been in the past. I’d love to have his defense back no question but he’s a frustrating offensive player to watch. I’d rather spend the money elsewhere

Problem is who are you spending that money on? No real top tier shortstops left. Only outfielders are Peralta, Brantley, Conforto, Pollock and Beni. BP and rotation are mostly set.

I think we are done guys. Upgraded a position we didn’t need to and average at the ones we did need to.

We have 3 or 4 spots left on the 40. Not saying we're going bat**** crazy in signings but AA will add a couple more players. No idea who since there's ever no leaks.

Think we're in the same boat on this. Who knows? Maybe AA makes us look stupid, but I would have been fine with the catcher situation as is(I too think WC is going to good), focused on SS (Unless the plan really is Grissom /Arcia) and LF FIRST.

no doubt we will fill in around the edges. bench type players or cheap filler for backup or bullpen. I just don't think AA is going to get anyone for more than 10-15 mill per. So nothing exciting from here on out.

We have one of the top 3-4 rosters in the sport. I dont know why yall are acting like we must make a bunch of other moves. What AA adds from here on out only makes it better, whatever that is.

Profar or Drury would really make the team deeper. I’m fine with either one of them

who says AA did not focus on SS? the FA prices were crazy and the trade prices i’m sure are too - whining about not using WC for Adames is so silly it’s impossible to take seriously.

if you were content having TDA and Contreras in the lineup every day then having Murphy and TDA in the lineup every day is the *same thing* except with vastly improved defense.

i’ll again say that when the opportunity to acquire one of the best players at their position presents itself, it’s a sound idea to take it. how many 5 WAR players are available for non-outrageous prices? those guys are 30 and getting 11 year contracts for $300m. AA got one for a fraction of the $ over 3 years for a good hitter who doesn’t have a real defensive position, a 3rd string catcher, and some minor leaguers. Murphy is really good!

I take the blame for Matt not liking Murphy. My all-out assault on Olson last year has tainted anyone in the Oakland system. I'm sorry Matt that my year long tirade on Olson is taking away what should be joy for acquiring Murphy

Lol

fans get so caught up in being deemed the winners of the off-season by the media that they miss the forest for the trees. SS are going for insane prices right now in FA, and stands to reason they are on the trade market as well. if AA feels he has a SS who can amass 2 WAR then acquiring a guy who was a 5 WAR player last year for likely way less than what a 5 WAR L SS would cost makes sense, even if it isn’t a position of dire need (though i’ll say again that TDA is likely to regress big time with the bat, and i don’t believe the Braves believe Contreras can be a regular catcher). i think AA correctly identified catcher as a seemingly really strong point that actually wasn’t.

I clearly never implied any of that. I simply stated we are probably done with any significant moves and pointed out my dislike of the trade. We should be a great club. I think a lot shallower at this point.

Other teams in our division win the winter, AA acts quietly, makes moves within the margins. We know what happens at the end of the year. I'm fine with the Murphy deal, especially with TDA getting older, and having battled injuries. I suspect he'll add an outfielder at some point, Dansby is all but gone. Andrus would be a fine stopgap for a year. Maybe add another cheap BP arm. But our roster is mostly fine. No team has a perfect roster.

Certainly wasnt expecting for catcher to be a position we upgraded, but AA is always thinking 1-2 years down the line, not just this year. Obviously dont blame AA for getting into the top of the shortstop market, those deals gonna look rough in 5 years maybe sooner.

Lol and just start the season with 3 empty holes on the 40 man? We're not done and to think we are is foolish. I saw a graphic yesterday that showed how much money each team has spent in free agent dollars. I think they had us at 1 million. If you think we're spending 1 million dollars this offseason and then kicking up our feet then you're nuts. We aren't done. We may not sign a big bat but we're most certainly not done.
