Official official offseason thread

This is that data: https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/lead...=player&year=2022&minThrows=100&pos=&team=144

The max throw velocity is a reliable way to measure max arm strength...surely every single player has made at least 1 max effort throw, regardless of position. Notice the average value correlates very well with the max velocity value. This tells me any potential sampling issues are close to non existent.

Arcia max (playing 2B frequently): 90.3
Swanson max (playing SS full time): 87.0
Grissom max (playing 2B full time): 80.0
Albies max (playing 2B full time): 78.3

Additionally, Swanson's arm ranked #48 out of 50 qualified SSs last year, yet he was still an excellent defender. Grissom's arm is significantly weaker than Swanson's.

Grissom's arm is going to be a liability at SS, but it may not be the huge deal we are making it out to be. Remember when everyone thought Camargo was a great SS due to his arm? Yeah....they were wrong. We tend to overrate the value of arm strength for all players.

Grissom might be just fine at SS.

I wonder if any of those throws are registered as a relay man from the outfield. I know those don't happen that ofen anymore.. but I can remember a few guns from Dansby to home as the relay.. I am not sure if Olson or Grissom would have been relay on the right side. I guess it depends on what runner is around what base that Olly or Griss has to hang around to cover..

who is left that is a meaningful upgrade at this point. The Money to get Andrus probably isn't worth the minor upgrade he would provide. I just don't buy this.

This is true. And someone like Andrus would probably be available for mid-season trade at half the financial cost. The only SS "available" that would be an instant upgrade and wouldn't cost much in terms of prospects is Rosario.

Well statcast data suggests he has a weak arm and also he is no longer a rookie so impossible for him to win.

Yeah, but see ... that's just how good Grissom is. He's so good, they'll probably give him ROY anyway. And probably Comeback Player of the Year and Cy Young as well.

At this point there isn’t anyone worth signing at SS. The correct play is to see what Grissom and Arcia can do, and then pivot at the deadline if needed. My guess is Arcia starts the year with Adrianza on the bench, and Grissom gets a shot after 2-3 months in AAA.

At least there are viable options at SS. LF is going to be a disaster, and it’s obvious it’s going to be a disaster right now. Going with Arcia is excusable. Going with Rosario/Lupwhatever is not.

I like the Arraez trade for the Twins.

Arraez is a guy without a position here in Minnesota. Correa at SS and Polanco at 2B and Arraez is not really a 1B. Arraez moved around the IF a bit, but he's a batting average-driven guy without a lot of power. He would have been revered in the 1960s and he can roll out of bed and hit line drives all over the field, but he's not particularly athletic.

Haven't read what the Twins will now do about 1B, but they desperately in need of starting pitching and Lopez is a huge upgrade for them.

I don't see how going with Andrus at SS isn't the correct move. He'd be cheap and provided 3.5 fWAR last year so there's potential meat on the bone and would make Arcia the backup so that deepens the bench. Make Grissom earn a job either at SS or in LF. Without another SS on board the IF prospects become quite grim at the first sign of injury.

But Andrus didn't come close to that type of production in the years prior, and will be 34 next year. Very good chance he will revert back to poor production.

Finally putting on his childhood favorite team's uniform at the big league level and playing a season at SS for us will give him the XP and stats boost.

The Braves already have 2 options at SS in Arcia and Grissom who can likely post the 2 wins Profar is projected to produce, as well as a cheap bench filler option in Adrianza. In an offseason where “value” was used as the excuse AA didn’t add in LF despite the Braves projecting to be worst in MLB, I find it hard to imagine Profar represents “value” at SS where they are projected to be mediocre.

At this point, assuming a big trade that will solve LF is out of the question until at least July, it's pointless to add anyone else unless Ozuna is removed from the roster. Andrus will probably wind up with Boston. The Braves should probably focus on adding a AAAA type at one of the other infield positions in case of more than one injury.

So are we better than last year or worse.
Might be good to go by position

SP— stood pat so even
BP— lost kenely and Matzek so worse
DH— worse with lose of WC imo
1B —. Same.
2nd — better with ozzie
SS — lost dansby so worse
3B — same
RF— saying better since Ronnie should be way better
CF — same although I like MH to improve
LF — worse since we lost gross but same could be used
Catcher — gotta say improved since I pegged WC on DH side.
Bench— say the same. It was blah last year too.

Hopefully we will get Harris and Acuna for more than ~115 games.

Bullpen is likely to be better.
