I don't need the announcer to be analytically minded. I need the announcer to not badmouth the entire modern sport of baseball for 30 minutes during the 4th inning of every single game.
As long as he doesn't do that any shmuck that can speak reasonably well is fine with me. These guys don't tell you anything you aren't already seeing on the screen.
He seems like a really good fit and he's a massive Braves homer, which helps lol
100% this. Listening to guys like Chip and Smoltz is so irritating. I'm watching a game that I love called by people who are constantly trying to tell me how much the game sucks. Gaudin seems like he loves baseball, which should be a dramatic improvement.
They badmouth it as a defense mechanism. Guys like Smoltz and Glavine feel threatened by the thought that modern analytics suggest what they did isn't as great as it was. A guy famous and considered "great" for making contact is obviously going to recoil at the realization that contact by itself is not very valuable.
The actual truth is that Smoltz and Glavine probably would have adapted their games to fit within modern analytics, just like they fit their games to the current baseball meta back then. In fact, I bet Smoltz would have been even better had he played in the modern game. Smoltz as an Astro in 2020 would possibly be the best pitcher on the planet.
Smoltz seems like the type that would have been super into spin rate similar to Gerrit Cole.
