Official official offseason thread

I think the main issue is not the 700k, but more what was used as reasoning. Don't know who came up with that argument, but if it wasn't the GM, that person might not have a job for much longer.

Obviously we don't know exactly what was said in the hearing, and it's possible the Brewers were making a more nuanced point that Burnes conflated into an attack. Looking at his game logs, Burnes had a few rough starts in August when the Brewers were losing their lead in the division -- four runs in 5 1/3 against the Pirates in a loss, seven runs (four earned) in 3 2/3 against the Dodgers in a loss. He also wasn't very good in wins over the Dodgers and Pirates, but again, they won those games. He was great in a win over the Cardinals which brought the Brewers within half a game.

I don't know. It seems awfully difficult to construct a narrative where Burnes played some significant role in Milwaukee missing the playoffs.

Ugh. Always something with the poor guy.
 
The point is Burnes is one of the most important members of the entire organization, and they decided to go into a room and explain why they think less of him than they should. And they did it to save pocket change. Why? Why in the world would an organization choose to sew discord for almost zero gain?

It's an issue with the mentality towards the people actually providing value, and I would not blame players one bit for not wanting to be part of it. I think a lot of folks who don't actually produce anything of value need to appreciate the folks who actually do. That lawyer, and that entire FO, has a job because Burnes is a valuable athlete...not the other way around.

After he leaves, the organization will definitely be in a tough spot. Mid market team. can't afford big time free agents, have a massive albatross contract on the books they won't be able to get rid of.....almost feel sorry for their fans.
 
It makes me wonder why the players didn't pull for stopping the arb process and going to a performance-based raise structure. It would save alot of time and heartache.

Owners would never agree to that. Going back years, it was the players who really wanted arbitration, but that's when the owners--for the most part--were dumber and somewhat resigned to losing in arbitration. That's changed over the past decade and I wonder if players are re-thinking things a bit. Owners used to want to avoid arbitration at all costs, but now they either non-tender a guy or trash him at the hearing.
 
Heh, that's the production chief telling an intern, "We're going to do a segment on Phillies relievers, make me a graphic." This is the best that intern could come up with.
