Spring Training Thread

I guess they aren’t using the fringe guys as these guys need to actually practice …. This time next week gonna be in the show !

Wonder why Pilar is not a fill in. He might be a sub that they are going to do mid game.. but He should be in battle with Hillard for the other OF spot.

As much as i hate seeing myself side with thethe the Braves have had several opportunities to rid themselves of Arcia and not only have they not done that they extended his team control. He's definitely improved with the bat in his time with the Braves. I don't think he's an all-star but at SS full time I wouldn't rule out a 2.5 fWAR season.
Meh...it's mostly cause it's thethe whom I still have to meet one day to discuss life 😂😂😂. Arcia may /may not be just fine. I think he won't be otherworldly but he's not needed to be YET. IF he proves us doubters wrong, who'd be upset?

I don’t believe they intend Arcia to hold down the position all season. What happens on opening day is really not an indication of much beyond the first few weeks.

I suspect that Shew and Griss will both see some time there during the year.

We worry way too much about the opening day roster decisions.

Braves giving Wright some more time to build strength up. Shuster and Dodd will start in the rotation. One of these jokers is gonna be ROY lol

Well, well, well…there actually is statcast data for ST now!

Dodd’s FA has been 93.9 mph with a spin rate of 2254. Shuster’s has been 92.4 mph with a pain rate of 2177. For reference Morton and Strider spin it at 2300+.

Shuster spins the breaking ball at 2247, and Dodd at 1996. These are not very good spin rates, with Dodd’s being the worst of any Brave who has thrown 100+ pitches. For reference, Morton has spun it at 3071 and Fried at 2679.

So the early data suggests these guys are back end starters, which makes me a little less excited. The Braves need Wright to get on track.

The hype on Shuster has always been about the changeup. Any data on it?

That's a bit unfortunate but not all that surprising since they were never really considered "stuff" guys... hopefully they can show elite control/command at the MLB level which can make them valuable pieces

For sure. These are the type of guys you are thrilled to have pre-arbitration while they still have options. Between them, Soroka, Elder, and Anderson you hope you can cobble together a quality 5th starter with good injury depth. Once you make the playoffs, these guys probably won’t be sniffing anything other than mop up innings if they are on the postseason roster at all.
