Official official offseason thread

Arcia might just be the Heredia rah rah guy. Him extent doesn't mean Shewmake or Grissom can't eventually come up and take the job. But he probably has value behind the scenes too.
 
Braaves acquired Richard Lovelady from the Royals for cash.

Had TJS in 2021, returned for 4 innings last season and posted 9-1 K/BB ratio. Threw 8 innings this spring allowing 0 runs, 5 hits, 0 BB, 10 K's.

In 2021, he had a 3.48 ERA with a 27.4 k %, 7.1% BB.

We assigned him to Gwinnett, this is his last option year, can be controlled through 2027

Our problem is a lack of a starting SS. If Grissom can't cut it there defensively then we really don't have any internal options. Shewmake is not a good bet to be able to hit and Arcia should never be considered as a starter. We have multiple reserve options but no real good bets of anyone who can really hold down the position.

This would seem to be a great hedge to get control over a stop gap SS until one of the guy's in AAA (or anyone else) proves they are the guy. Arcia is about to get a shot at proving he can be an everyday SS. If he plays to a WAR of 1.5, what is another organization going to throw at him to fill a hole at SS. AA surely doesn't want to be in a bidding war for someone like Arcia. But without the signing he might have to be if no one steps up this year? If Arcia plays to -0.5? He's a clubhouse guy, that can play multiple positions, only on the books for $5 million total over 2 years. If he gets completely passed on the depth chart, eat it or ship him out with a prospect.
 
Interesting that the Pirates and Bryan Reynolds are in agreement on a number for an extension around $106m, but he wants an opt out and the Pirates are refusing to give him one.

I still wonder what our story would have been had we signed Bonds instead of Maddux.

I feel like Bonds would have ruined the clubhouse chemistry and we wouldn't have been as successful as we were.

I imagine Bobby could have handled him. Even Sheffield was a model citizen in our clubhouse.

They are kind of in Oakland A's-land. Given their inability to buy out arbitration years and extend beyond arbitration, they always seem to be getting dimes-to-dollars for their prospects when they have to move them and then it's just rinse and repeat. They aren't going to win the Central, but they have some interesting pieces, especially Cruz and Contreras.
 
Pittsburgh is a declining ****hole losing residents and overall wealth, just like the rest of the old manufacturing rust belt. That’s why the pirates are the way they are, and has nothing to do with a player they had decades ago.
 
Hey Scheff - I’m going to guess you’ve never been to Pittsburg - the downtown is gorgeous with all kinds of amazing architecture and restaurants and etc - the bridges and rivers and the ballpark and that whole area are very impressive. The healthcare system there is world class. It’s nothing like you describe.
They just have piss poor ownership and management. If they actually you know tried to compete - they would draw- and have a great situation. They need to follow the Orioles blueprint. But they won’t. Signing Reynolds is beyond stupid.
