GDT 4/2 : The Palm Sunday Debut of the Shuster!

Obviously the first inning was a dud—and, obviously, the overall backdrop was the Zombie Expos don't have much firepower offensively—but I was nevertheless encouraged by Shuster's rebound. He could've let the game get way farther away from him, but he didn't.

With his stuff, five walks will never cut it; but he was in the zone a lot more after the first inning, and was able to get outs. Something to build on, at least, since he's got a least a couple more starts before the Braves have any decisions to make.

2-1 this season, so not really.

Those weren't your traditional day games so I think our guys forgot they're terrible during the day. Today was a traditional Sunday afternoon game. So many times our bats have gone quiet against lousy pitchers on Sunday afternoons.

If Shuster or Dodd don't pan out for 5th starter, we can always try Grissom since SS didn't work out yet for him.

Culberson pitched an inning in relief for Gwinnett today. Anthopoulos' genius may have recognized the perfect 5th starter after he gets stretched out.

Jared Shuster surrendered four runs and walked five in 4 2/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Nationals.
Shuster averaged just 90.1 mph with his fastball today, which was pretty discouraging. There was no Statcast in his final three spring starts, but when he pitched March 12 against the Pirates, he averaged 92.3 mph then. He never even touched 92 mph today, and his slider, at 82.3 mph, was a full three mph slower than it was three weeks ago. Maybe it's a dead arm issue. If not, those with high hopes for the rookie might find themselves disappointed.

I really don't think I'd put much into Shuster's performance. Not yet, anyways. Give him another start. He was clearly terrified from the get-go.

I don't put much stock in early April starts for anyone. Guys often hit that dead arm period they have to pitch through.

Shuster's FA was 90.6 mph with 8.0" of rise. That's poor velocity with below average movement. Needless to say, that isn't going to cut it as an MLB SP without elite control or superb breaking stuff, not even a #5.

The SL was 82.9 mph with 2.0" of horizontal break and 0.6" of "rise". That's below average velocity, close to average horizontal movement, and above average vertical movement. This is a decently average-ish pitch.

The CH had a 10 mph delta from the FA, with 4.7" of fade and 5.2" of "rise". The velo delta is plus, but the movement well below average side to side, and average vertically. If this is his premiere pitch, I don't see how.

All in all this looks to be a very mediocre arsenal. He's basically a LH version of Ian Anderson minus 2 grades on the FA. Without absolute pinpoint command of the FA, I don't see how Shuster is anything more than a fill in SP who will be looking to catch onto non-contenders within the next 5 years.

How much variation can there be on a good day vs a bad day? Just curious bc i read/heard his slider wasn't "on" yesterday, and his velocity was obviously down from ST

Assuming he gets another start, we will see then.

This is why I only care about MLB Statcast data. Whatever numbers come out of random ST complexes may or may not be reliably calibrated.

As of right now, the reliable info we have suggests Shuster isn't an MLB SP for a contender. Having low velocity isn't something that usually happens in MLB debuts...

I think we need more data before we grade him.. but if he was not throwing as hard trying to go deeper in the game then he needs to be sent to the pen.. no way do I want a starter soft tossing batting practice pitches every 5 days. I was more hyped about Dodd, so hopefully he doesn't dissapoint.

Via the team's official Twitter: The #Braves today selected the contract of LHP Dylan Dodd to Atlanta and optioned LHP Jared Shuster to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta designated OF Jordan Luplow for assignment.

So, in other words, his best pitch is roughly equivalent to a decent pitcher's third-best pitch.

I can only watch on Gameday, so I saw the disappointing velocities but couldn't tell anything else. It appears that he doesn't have enough in his arsenal to pitch backwards, so our hope is that he just has to pump up #1 without losing his control.

I can hardly wait for someone to discount his fastball velocity by claiming that Shuster's fastball is "sneaky fast."

This seems to me like a vote of confidence in Eli White.
