GRAHAM FEELS GOOD IN RETURN

Stepping onto the mound at Trustmark Park on Monday, J.R. Graham was nervous.
The last time the Braves' No. 6 prospect was there, he was lifted in the third inning with shoulder discomfort that turned into a season-ending injury. But after 11 months of rehabbing and rebuilding arm strength, he was back to pitching in a Mississippi uniform again.
As soon as he threw the first pitch -- a called strike to Mobile's Mike Freeman -- the nerves calmed and Graham settled into a groove, sitting down 15 of 16 batters in the Double-A Braves' 4-0 shutout of the Mobile BayBears in the first game of a doubleheader.

"It felt good to be back out there," Graham said.

With three strikeouts and nine ground-ball outs, the 23-year-old right-hander kept his innings quick and his teammates involved -- the way he likes it.

"[Catcher Matt] Kennelly called a good game. My fastball was working, got the curveball when I needed to. … I pitched a helluva game," he said. "Defense really helped me out, a lot of good diving stops ... really good stop by [shortstop] Gustavo Nunez to preserve the no-hitter."

After five hitless innings and one walk allotted to Sean Jamieson in the second, Graham's day was done. Though he wasn't aware of any pitch-count limits, the 2011 Draft pick thought his coaches were just being cautious in his first game back.
Graham made just eight starts last season for Mississippi prior to his injury. He went 1-3, kept Southern League batters to a .283 ERA and did not allow a home run during that span. Following rehab this offseason, Graham received an invite to big league camp, where he allowed two runs on six hits in four innings.
With teammate Barrett Kleinknecht's bat in his hands, Graham slapped a single past shortstop Jamieson and into center field to continue his streak of notching one hit in each of his professional seasons.
Since the Braves didn't score until the sixth inning, Ryne Harper (1-0) picked up the win. The right-hander pitched one hitless inning with two strikeouts.

Wow! Night of the Thumpasaurus People in Norfolk tonight. 9-1 G-Braves and we're not done in the top of the 3rd.

My break out pick this year in the minor leagues Elander is off to a fine start. Not the power I expected but this guy can hit. I think he will be in LF come opening day 2016.

What's the deal with Mejia anyway? Seems like he would be a great bench guy...no position or something?

Pretty much a DH-type. Started out as an OF when first signed and was moved to 1B. Reports on his defense aren't very glowing. I saw him play once and he is huge. Looks like a tight end.

He vaguely resembles Pujols in his build and face.

Really looks confident up there. He would have to be a backup to Freddie, and unless he goes down I don't see us carrying a backup 1b.

Mejia for us would play the position of bat. RIght now that's occupied by Doumit and he has competition in the minors from Terds. WHo plays bat and also can play the field at least acceptably.

But who pinch-hit with the bases loaded in the ninth inning Tuesday night? Gerald freaking Laird! Tell me that Mejia couldn't be more useful than, say, Varvaro.

Right now, we could use the position of Bat a whole lot.

Well I don't agree with Fredi's use of the bench this early in the season. Personally I think carrying Pena and Pastornicky is pretty redundant. I wanted Terds instead of Pastornicky. With Pena, Schafer, Pastor, and Laird we have 4 defensive first bench players. I like to have a 3/2 balance. Either Laird or Pastor should be gone and my vote is Pastor.

My fandom was hatched in the era of 9- and 10-man pitching staffs with 7 or 8 guys on the bench instead of the standard five on the bench now. Really limits bench options late. Problem is for the Braves right now is that, at least to me, the bullpen other than Kimbrel, Avilan, and Walden is really iffy, so they continue to go with a 7-man pen. I think there are better options for that than Varvaro and at some point we will see one.

I don't like how the Braves typically construct their bench. I would love to have Mejia up in the majors as a pinch hitter. Pena or Paster, Mejia, Doumit, Laird, Schafer.

Too many key spots come up for pinch hitters where we have guys like Pena, pastor, Laird, or Schafer pinch hitting.

I agree with this. Need to drop one of Pena/Pastornicky and Laird, and bring up Mejia and Terdo. If your offense is essentially built around the 3 run home run, then you need more than one guy off the bench that can hit with some pop.
