Re: Soroka - AA said they won’t yo- yo him. That when he comes up it’s for good. And I suspect it’s not Soroka they are waiting on- I think it’s, “ let’s see what we have with Dodd and Schuster -and then we can go down and get Mike once one of those guys shows us he’s not the answer,” and I think Dodd just showed us.

Saw this on AJ from last night.

AJ Smith-Shawver lived up to hype tonight.
7 IP/4 H/2 ER/3 BB/8 K
2 walks to start innings & a hanging curve, but otherwise, AJ was stellar.
86 P/58 S(67.4%)/26% whiff/30% CSW
FB: 95/t97 good ride 4-7 in of run
SL: 85 36 in hMOV/5-6 in hMOV
CU: 78-80 56-61 in vMOV/5-10 in hMOV 🔥

That doesn't make much sense though. We have 2 rotation spots currently open. We can cycle Dodd and Schuster up and down between starts and the same read on these guys.

Need chef to tell us where these would grade

So we get those game by game spin rates but i can’t recall FG using them in eval…unless I’ve missed it this whole time.

I just read a piece over on talking chop about AJSS’ amazing game last night and they made a good point - he is still figuring out his slider with the AAA (same as MLB) ball - and despite his rocket ascent to this level, should stay where he is until the slider works.
I suspect that once he gets that go where he wants it to, that’s he’s gonna get the call. And it can’t happen soon enough.
Also, of note, Grissom hitting .333 - hope he keeps that up. He could be very valuable in a trade for some relief help.
Also, my favorite prospect - Vodnik our future closer - stunk up Mississippi again it looks like.

David McCabe - This guy is intriguing. Was there for a HR he hit..missed the other, but a quick thought : his setup is really different. Kind of straight legged, and for a 6'3 guy kinda compact. He uncoils when he swings. I've seen him hit a HR to right and left field now and he continually just stands out. Seems confident and just a natural leader. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Why is he repeating A ball at 23-years-old? Seems like a red flag

It is a bit of a mystery. There's no one that would be taking ABs from him in Rome. Staff probably saw something that needed to ironed out a the entry level. He came out of a D1 program, so it is a bit puzzling. I'm guessing he'll move up to Rome soon.

That is what gives me pause. There have been puzzling assignments for sure. Tavarez is a good example too. They know what they want to see..but I've watched Rome and Augusta frequently...a few players may be released /reassigned after the draft and short season begins.

I see Tavarez has been sent back to the FCL. That league--and the DSL--starts on June 5. Draft is July 9. Curious to see the shuffling begin.

One can't tell from the two-dimensional stats, but it's hard to figure out the Braves' minor league hitting instruction. K-rates are unbelieveably high even for the guys who don't project as power hitters.

Yeah..I figured that and made an observation about Tavarez going back down. I don't know if I'll make the short season games this year, but I'm curious about Benitez and Gold. The catcher...can't remember his name but he had pretty good reviews. I think Tavarez will be fine, but to your point 50, the strike out rates are absurd. I saw some adjustments with a few players but whomever is the hitting coordinator needs to figure out the strategy. It's been ugly.

De Grandpre keeps this up and he'll be in the big league bullpen in August. Just kidding, but it seems like that's the new approach.

You may not be kidding.

With every pitcher throwing as hard as they possibly can until their arm falls off, most pitchers are done by 27 anyway. Might as well bring them up at 20, squeeze all the juice out of them by 27, then let the Mets and Padres pay them for another four years of rehab.

Gov you may be on to something.

Who’s the prospect to watch now that AJ is up? Do we have one?

Only position players of interest are both in Rome (SS/3B Alvarez and 3B/1B McCabe). Some real borderliners in guys like Kilpatrick, Franklin, Tolve, Valdes, and Zebrowski. Conley and Waddell project as possible utility IFs. Just not much else.

Murphy and De Grandpre among the pitchers.
