It's not often a team hits two grand slam HRs in one game, but the Mississippi Braves did that last night in their 15-3 win over Pensacola. Cade Bunnell connected with the bases loaded in first inning and Luke Waddell duplicated it in the eighth. Some interesting guys on the Mississippi roster. Not a lot of high ceilings, but some guys with mid-range potential (Franklin, Waddell, Tolve, Valdes, Conley) who could become contributors.
Bunnell has carved out an interesting career for himself. From Wisconsin (which no longer fields a Big Ten baseball program) and played very little as a freshman at Kansas State. Tranferred back to a technical/community college in Wisconsin where he enjoyed a good season. Went on to play two seasons at Indiana, where he didn't play much or that well. He somehow got on the Braves' radar and they made him their 40th-round pick in 2019. He's had an uneven career and he strikes out a ton, but he's shown power, plate discipline, and versatility around the infield making him a good guy to have on a roster. Braves sent him to the Arizona Fall League last off-season where he couldn't replicate his 2022 second-half performance with Mississippi that saw his average shoot up to over .300 for the first time ever in his post-secondary and professional careers. At age 26 and with a K-rate that hovers in the high 30% range, there is a pretty hard ceiling for him to break through, but I do marvel how he's stuck around and has been an asset for each of the minor league teams he played on.
