Official Around Baseball 2023 Thread

This is where the team we are trading with comes into play. Grissom may be our best overall chip but the Padres should have no interest at all in him with who they have on the team.

I do expect the team to try and trade for an impact reliever but the rest of the team is honestly set.

I think our bullpen is okay. I mean, we have Chavez when healthy/Lee/McHugh/Minter/Anderson/Iggy as backend guys. Even Yates and JJ show signs of dominance. Wouldnt say it's a weakness. I dont think Hader would cost as much as people think though.

I wonder if the Pirates would do a swap with Grissom.. I don't know what they have in AAA, but swap a blocked prospect for a blocked prospect. The Priates could def use some second base help.

Also, the white sox, Nats and rockies could possibly use some second base help.

It would be nice to get one more guy to push everyone down one spot, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a closer. An 8th or even 7th inning guy would help.

I still think we need a innings eating 5th starter, and perhaps a utility middle infielder. All could be had for cheap.

Agreed that the bullpen is probably our biggest need. But if we can get a good rotation piece, we could technically move some of our rotation back up options to the pen. Then come playoff time, you go with your best 3 starters with #4 being if required.

Fried
Strider
Elder
Giolito
Morton

You could experiment with a 6 man rotation to keep them fresh....the issue i'd have with that would be with Soroka. He still has control issues and that is hard to hone in while in the pen.

I keep telling you guys our number 1 target needs to be Brad Hand. Roughed up his last outing, but was rocking a 3.62 ERA and 2.81 FIP before that outing. Closer experience in case Iglesias gets hurt/continues to look shakey. Still striking out over 10 batters per inning. Super cheap contract this year with a manageable option for next year or a 500k buyout.

Bullpen isn't a weakness by any means. It's got the 3rd best ERA and 2nd best FIP in baseball. But looking towards the playoffs that's the only spot I feel we can upgrade to have a big impact. Any moves should be moving the playoff needle. I seriously doubt it's going to come in the rotation. Braves should be trotting out Fried/Strider/Elder/Morton. The lineup is stacked and the only real place to upgrade is LF but Rosario and Pillar are doing a good job there. So it would need to be a stud like Soto to move the needle and that's not happening. Bullpen is it.

I agree on bullpen, i could see AA move someone like Yates/JJ/McHugh if it meant adding an impact arm.

The bullpen may not be a weakness, but I'd love to add one more late inning proven guy. I'm not sure how confident I'd feel in the playoffs with Yates, Anderson or Chavez trying to be the bridge to Iglesias (who has also been shaky at times). Those guys are good but I could also easily see them blowing a 1 run lead vs a good team.

Reds are +26 in Run Differential since they promoted Elly De La Cruz on June 6. For anyone still doubting them, I think it's pretty safe to say that they are legit.

He’s also way over performing

He isn't the only reason they are at +26. Abbot has been a huge boost too with a whopping 2.4 bWAR in only 6 starts. And getting Votto back has helped too. But there is no denying that Elly has energized that club since his arrival.

I wouldn't say the Pirates are stacked at the position, but they have Hayes at 3B, Gonzalez currently at SS (although his future is probably at 2B), SS Llover Peguero is in AA and he was a top 100 guy not too long ago whose star has fallen somewhat. Marcano came over from the Padres in the Adam Frazier deal and he can play around the IF/OF. Surrendered Braves' international signing Jae-Hwan Bae is also in the IF mix for them. I don't know if Grissom would fit there, but he might.

Grissom has graduated out from prospect rankings, but I wonder what his value truly is. He's hit for average in Gwinnett with doubles power, but I think the question for him is will he hit enough to play 3B or improve his middle infield defense enough to play at a position where his bat will carry. He's still only 22 and he did get rushed last year, so his game is likely still in the refinement stage. I just wonder if his perceived ceiling isn't high enough to generate a lot of interest.

Hand is definitely worth considering. Anthopoulos hasn't been scared off by a possible extra year of control and Hand fits that way of thinking. I see Dylan Lee went on the 60-day and I don't know if that scratches him for the year or not. Minter is currently our on LHP of any note and I while I can't speak for others, I don't really want to see Lucas Luetge Part Deux. Like thewupk said, the bullpen is about the only spot where an upgrade makes sense, although I think a utility IF would help.
