Movie Thread

Watched the Documentary the Sparks Brothers, it's quite good. Edgar Wright has a fantastic eye. His choice of cuts were awesome. It was an interesting film. Cool that someone people found so inspiration is getting a doc froma big name to get their name otu there.

Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves is the most fun I've had in theaters in a long time. I'm not gonna pretend it's an amazing film. But it reminds me of the fun I had seeing Last Jedi, or Force Awakens, or Avengers.

I keep hearing controversy surrounding The Little Mermaid so I listened to some of the songs on YouTube (no way I'm letting myself get dragged in to watch it). A few observations.

Under The Sea is awful. It's like someone singing along to the original. There's no strength behind the performance, probably because the actor was struggling to keep the accent while singing.

Kiss the Girl was just as bad. Karaoke like.

Part of Your World is being over hyped. Halle Bailey has a perfect voice for the part but her direction was abysmal. She wasn't allowed to make it her own but she was made to sing it different enough that it ended up sounding like she just couldn't match the original. Also, her diction is bad when she sings. She dropped half a dozen Rs and a couple Ts.

Alas, I fear my kid will make me watch it once it hits Disney+ and I really don't want to.

1 week from maybe the biggest movie showing of the year. COmbination of Barbie for casuals and Oppenheimer for blockbuster fans/Nolan fanboys.

Barbie is going to bomb big time. I imagine the reviews will be putrid

I'd bet a healthy chunk of change it will do well. It won't be the biggest seller of the year, neither will Oppenheimer but it will do very well. My guess is it will beat movies like Transformers and John Wick, though that will depend on how it does in China. But I'll assume it should do at least acceptable.

My hope is Oppenheimer gets in around 700M global, and Barbie around 500M.

Don't bet on that until it happens. Plenty of times movies seem like they'll be great, then they hit and suck. I mean Prometheus is a classic example.

This is true. Ridley Scott can make magic though. And Joaquin Phoenix is goated at this point. That and Oppenheimer are the two I'm looking forward to the most this year.

Phoenix has also missed. Sure he's an amazing actor, but sometimes he takes meh roles. Which happens, get a shot to act with an icon, etc.

I feel like it's got strong vibes to be like that movie that had Damon, Affleck, and Adam Driver that Scott did, it will get oscar noms, but be meh. Hope I'm wrong.

I am most excited for Oppenheimer. I'm a Nolan nut, anyone who knows me and movies knows I love Nolan. I'm not seeing it at launch most likely because the following week we're heading to Boston to see the Sox/Braves and instead of seeing it on the normal screens around me, i'm going to see it in Imax.

Movies yet to come out I'm still excited for aside from that. Dune is the big one. but alos Ghostbusters Afterlife 2 should be fun, I'm down for the Marvels. Wonka and Napoleon are on wait and sees for me. I want to see more of them before I get excited or not.

Doubt it. But they really missed the mark making it PG-13. Essentially excluding pre-teen girls from your market base, as most parents likely won't want their young girls watching it. My daughter certainly won't see it right now at age 4.

It's targeted to Millenials and Gen X. I agree it's missing money, but it's Greta Gerwig, she wouldn't be part of it if it was Super Mario Bros Movie but Barbie.

I just feel like there was a happy medium. A movie with a similar plot to this was Enchanted with Amy Adams, and it was a pretty big hit with kids and adults alike.
