Trade deadline thread

The only thing standing between us and Yonny Chirinos possibly starting a playoff game for us is the questionable health of Fried and Wright. That's an unacceptable situation to be in.

For Him? We could have beat that. That's a Steal for the Phillies.

I wouldn't call it a steal. Lorenzen is a having a nice year overall, but he's a 31 year old rental former reliever that is reaching his innings ceiling. I would not have minded to land him, but he was never going to be confused as an impact starter.

Lots of guys that would be of use to us have gone for packages we could easily beat. I've assumed to this point that it was because AA was chasing other targets but if we don't end up with a starter, it's AA's own fault.

Lorenzen is only useful as a backup plan if Fried doesn't come back at all. Other than that he's a non factor for the playoffs.

Lorenzen for a 40+ seems like a deal AA could have pulled off for a guy likely to be better than both Morton and Elder

Buster Olney says the Braves have been involved in the starting pitching market, but skepticism is there they will land a starter

Even Olney doesn't know what AA will do. Could be he heard from rival clubs that they were asking far more for what AA was comfortable dealing

Chirinos will not be starting a playoff game regardless. He won't even be on the playoff roster unless a bunch of guys get hurt. If Fried/Wright have more health issues, our options would likely be (in order):

1. Jesse Chavez and BP game.

2. Mike Soroka

3. AJSS

Chirinos won't be a factor.

Chirinos probably won't even be on the roster after his next start on Wednesday, after which Fried will take his roster spot.

I agree, but the cost was low and we could have used someone like that.

Let’s just hope I don’t have to bump these comments in a couple months to remind everyone that Lorenzen could have been had for the equivalent of Ignacio Alvarez or Diego Benitez.

Who are those guys? Exactly.

Exactly. The problem is there's a very real chance we could be down 2 starters going into the playoffs. We can't count on Wright coming back with his shoulder. So we need Fried, Strider, Morton, and Elder to stay healthy. If Wright can't come back and Strider gets hurt again, or Morton breaks another leg, or Fried's forearm/elbow acts up again, we're in a bit of trouble.

We're placing way too much faith in Fried's arm health and the rest of the rotation staying healthy. That worries me.

Also a lot of faith in elder and Morton being good.

AA should get another SP.

That's a lot of if's.
