Trade deadline thread

AA wanted an impact guy and only JV was that guy and I’m glad we didn’t get him. AA said 10 mins till they got a call and were running around to see what they could do but ran out of time. That’s interesting, I wonder who it was. He said the prices were sky high and came down the last 10 mins.

It may have been a disappointing deadline, but it’s important to remember this is still the best team in the sport. They are still the most likely roster to win the whole thing.

You literally just make **** up.

Flaherty, Lynn, and Montgomery all went pretty cheap. Lorenzen was practically given away. E-rod should have been traded.

All rentals.

That doesn't even count guys like Snell and Stroman who were originally on the market.

None of those guys are upgrades over what we have. AA even came out and said that's not what they were looking for.

You do realize we've been running with 3 MLB quality starters for months now? Right?

Our starting pitching isnt deep and we have some fragile starters.

How anyone can say we don't need rotation depth is beyond me.

Because we don't need to make any moves for the regular season. Who cares if we have some AAAA guy start every 5th day. AA is looking towards the playoffs. And anyone of the guys you listed isn't going to start over Fried/Strider/Elder/Morton.

If it's not going to help the playoffs then it doesn't matter.

Are any of the first 4 better than Morton or Elder? Most likely not. Even if they didnt get dealt for much.

AA wasnt trading away prospect depth for something that would help in the regular season. Guys like Yonny, Soroka, AJSS, and eventually Wright can eat up the rest of the season innings plus the bullpen is deep enough to do an opener or two. Other than Verlander/Scherzer (who i doubt the Mets would trade to us and i doubt AA would give what they'd want), there wasnt any impact guys on the market.

I'm as happy as the next guy to laugh at striker's hyperbole, but I do think there's a significant risk to not acquiring a starter, even if that guy isn't an "impact arm." No, Flaherty, Montgomery, Rodriguez, Lorenzen and the like aren't really impact arms, but they do add depth to the rotation and give you Fried insurance. They reduce the chances you have to do a bullpen game or something similarly desperate in the playoffs. And while the division is in hand, one more competent arm in the rotation means one fewer start for the Shuster-Dodd-Soroka-AJSS quartet for the rest of the regular season, which could be helpful in maintaining the best record in the league.

I'm not going to lose too many nights of sleep over this, and considering the state of the farm system it's probably necessary to take a break from raiding it for a season or two. But inaction has its risks as well.

Don't ask if they're better than Elder or Morton, ask if they're better than a BP game. If Fried's forearm soreness flares up again, there's a good chance we have to rely on BP games in the playoffs.

We won in 21 with a rotation full of holes so it can be done but it's not something you want to rely on.

This is all I'm saying. Not getting a starter isn't catastrophic as we're still loaded. It's just puzzling why AA wouldn't try to get some depth in the rotation to guard against injury.

Some of you wanting to be mad at Alex for not making a trade for a big name, have you forgot takes two to tango in these potential trades? We’re you in the office with him in the calls and negotiations? This isn’t fantasy baseball or trading baseball cards when you were ten years old. The fact of the matter is the Braves did not need to do much, and still a couple things were done in improving bullpen and bench depth. I have a feeling some of you would complain if the Braves acquired Ohtani for Rosario and the fourth starter in Mississippi.

Would I have like to get a Dylan Cease or someone like that? Sure. But if the deal isn’t right, don’t do it. I’d much rather be in this position instead of like the Reds or Diamondbacks who didn’t get a needed starter, the Yankees who needed a bat and didn’t get one, or the Mets who traded two hall of famers all while paying both almost $100M while not playing for them.

We have a much, much, much better rotation than 2021. I think Soroka would be next guy up if something happened to the above. And we'll see what Wright is by then. AA said he thinks they'll be fine and he has more information than we do.

We're probably screwed if something happened to Fried anyway. A guy like Montgomery/Flaherty/Lorenzen isnt changing anything.

I trust AA overall but I don't blindly agree with everything he says. He's not always motivated to be honest. It's easier to tell your fans how little you needed a trade than to tell them how adding salary would have cut into profit margins.

Not saying that's the case here, just saying no GM should be trusted in everything they say.

Because at times the staff has been tops in baseball and we have won 67 ****ing games and almost every series against a fellow division leader.

This team is loaded.

This is all baseless conjecture
