GDT 8/10/23: Braves @ Pirates

I love it when Arcia plays well. I've always said I'd love to be wrong about him. I'll admit I was wrong about him. Mostly about his defense.

When you look at his expected stats, Arcia is pretty close to his preseason projections. He's basically been what was expected except with luck.

His defense has been the highlight though. I don't know if it's getting back at a position he's more comfortable at or getting to play everyday but his defense has way outstripped what I expected.

I will point out again that you thought his projections were off and should be lower/worse. So you were in fact wrong about both his offense and defense, you were just more wrong about his defense.

Atlanta not scoring a run or two that inning following a fake HBP that should have been a strike and a double play overturned because umpires make **** up is so fun.

Elder has always had semi-spotty command but it's so weird to see it evaporate this quickly. It's been mainly nonexistent since the All-Star Break. Particularly, his sinker.

Meh, the difference between what I thought he might be and what he is at the plate (minus luck) this year is relatively minor compared to what I thought about his defense. I looked at his declining defensive value, looked how he's at an age where some players see their range decrease, and thought he'd barely be able to man the position. If that was the case we'd be in trouble.

I'm glad he's hitting better than I thought but I'm much, much happier he's proved me wrong about his defense. He could hit like I expected and still be playable with defense like he's had this year.

Outplaying teams by wide margins only to be in dogfights is getting really, really old.

With the pen drained, I would imagine Twitner is going to ride Elder as far as he can.. so I hope the offense is ready to score a few more runs..

Lol yes you were ultra wrong on his defense and just plain wrong on his offense.

To be fair, this is also what happens when our pitchers hit their spots. Elder hasn't been awful today, but his command is off a tick. You can see it when you look at d'Arnaud's positioning. This has been the story for nearly every single one of our pitchers over the last month. They're nowhere near as bad as the numbers indicate, but there's a ton of truth in it given spotty command.

It’ll even out. Just win the games in the end. They’ll be back to crushing teams on the reg soon enough

That's where I'm at with it. In the end, the numbers will even out and the wins are wins, albeit a 10-run rout or a one-run fiasco.

It's just frustrating to watch. It's also frustrating to see the pen get taxed so much in a stretch where we should be able to cruise a bit.

Mets series is just what we needed.

Beat up on them and make them miserable will be the boost we need for next few weeks.

Two more balls crushed for outs that inning.

We have 10 balls put in play at over 100 MPH. The Bucs have 1.
