There's a similar thing with Cajuns. When they left France the French started calling then coonasses. Cajuns adopted the name and started using it with pride. There's a small minority of Cajuns typically wealthy liberals who want it to be considered a racial slur.

Minor League teams like Gwinnett and Rome have gone away from calling themselves the braves because you can't sell as much merch if all looks the same.

The Savannah Bananas started this recent trend of minor league teams coming up with localized catchy names because it sells merch.

Rome announced a name change and asked for fan input3 and the of course Braves Redneck contingent has all the smartest responses. (Hint: almost all the responses involve something something democrats liberals political correctness)
