GDT: 9/5/2023 - Cardinals at Braves; Arcia gets the night off

Easy moves to make rest of year. Lopez basically spells 2nd, short and 3rd once a week, Ozuna sits one night a week and give Acuna a DH game, get Harris a night off each week in center and no reason Pillar shouldn't get some starts across the outfield

We just need to worry about getting TDA some rest too.

I'm probably the lone wolf thats okay with Murphy getting rest... But if that happens in the playoffs, it's a problem given how vital runs are in the playoffs.

yeah, I am ok with rest.. not ok with him being a part time player. You don't just change what you have done all year come Oct. I mean if the Braves start laying down sac. bunts in the second inning or start an opener for Strider, then Twit is dumber than I thought. So playing a guy at 50% clip down the stretch isn't giving a guy rest, it is signalling that he is a part time player.

That's been my point all along. Its not like we started playing him 50% of the time in mid-September. Its been this way for basically going on over two months. Every other player plays literally every day. So I don't buy that its been front-office tactics to rest players, because if the FO was getting involved, there is no reason they wouldn't do basic things like suggesting we rest a player once a freaking month.

I'm personally convinced Snit legitimately views them as equals despite Murphy being a superior hitter this year and superior catcher and that for whatever reason, Snit just got it in his head that Murphy is not an elite player, which this year he has so clearly been.

I'm trying to lay-off complaining on this one, but since others laid the bread crumbs this time... I'll just state I'm just hoping - and praying - that in the playoffs the front office overrules and says there is no acceptable reason with days off between several games, to EVER play TD over Murphy. In a short 5 or 7 game series, there is no excuse for resting a better player to play an inferior player both offensively and defensively.

At this point we won't know until the playoffs, because its clear that Snit is going to alternate rest of the year. Hopefully front office overrules in playoffs. Crazy thing to me is just that its not one of those scenarios where TD is slightly better defensively and a manager over-compensates and decides he likes the defense enough to sacrifice offensively. Murphy is legit like the best defensive catcher in baseball this year.

In separate news, as someone that appreciates the stats of baseball, hoping coming back home against a bad cards team, we can keep the stat gravy train rolling.

Acuna march to 40 bombs and MVP
Olson push for 50+ bombs
Riley / Ozuna push for 40 bombs
Team homer record
Ozzie secure 30 bombs
Murphy push to reclaim the starting job :)

I guess since Olson hit a homer again he doesn't deserve to get any rest or scheduled off days.

Biggest reason we need Murphy in games in October is so he can throw runners out at second base- and teams know this and won’t be stealing many bases on us… and his ability to hit baseballs a long way too.
I think we are keeping him under bubble wrap until then though ..and I have a strong hunch this is a front office move.

No. No, he does not. It’s a rule around here - first basemen play 162. And when they can’t walk in October, well, you just have to have guys like Rosario around to hit homers for you.

This is spot on and how the guys should have been managed all year. Lopez should be getting 1 start per week at the IF positions, which gives each starter 1 day off each month. Same with Pillar in the OF.

This rests guys AND keeps guys like Lopez sharp for when he has to replace someone for 10+ days. There is simply no excuse for allowing competent MLB players to rot on the bench. Now, it is fair to claim the Braves didn't have a competent IFer on the bench to start the year, but Lopez is a premium bench player and should be used as such.

I’m surprised this hasn’t been an edict from the front office. Especially this year, since the Braves have had the division wrapped up since June.

The Braves do such a good job managing pitcher workloads and the catcher rotation that it’s puzzling to see them completely punt resting position players.

I would agree with this. Baseball Savant has their own fielding runs leaderboard and Murphy is the 3rd best defender in baseball and 2nd best catcher according to it. He excells in all 3 aspects of catching that they track. Framing, throwing, and blocking.

I think we have to take seriously the position Ken Rosenthal reported on a few weeks ago -- namely, that the Braves sincerely think that their core guys playing every day is both vitally important to building a good culture and actually keeps them better prepared for the rigors of a long season and postseason.

Now, "take seriously" doesn't mean "agree with," of course. I'm pretty sure I'd rather see them give these guys a rest then aim for multiple 162-game player seasons. But the working assumption seems to be that they're choosing the latter option because Snitker is dumb and the front office just rolls its eyes and isn't willing to crack the whip on this issue, and the evidence increasingly seems to point to other explanations.

In case anyone was wondering. Chirinos was transfered to the 60-day IL. While unlikely, he's the person that would likely be replaced by Waldrep should the Braves add him to the playoff roster.
