This is a thread for people to ask advice on anything and everything.

I'm in the market for a new pair of running shoes. I want something with good cushion to save my aching joints but also on the lighter side. Nothing clunky.

I've had Hoka Clifton 9's recommended. Anyone have them? Anyone have another shoe they swear by?
 
Go get fit by a running shop. You may end up liking something that’s not on your radar.

Brooks are good without being large. I like running in my Nike Pegasus Trails.

I'm generally the wrong person to ask about shoes as I have weird sized feet and metatarsus in my right foot, etc.

Generally speaking, Hoka's are aces for plantar fasciitis, and similar injuries. I don't know if I would recommend them if you don't have an injury like that as over supported shoes can lead to other issues.

Tapate I think is most right, if you can go to a shop that specializes in shoes you can find the right fit. Many years ago when I was going on the journey to cure my foot pain I went to see a specialist and they fit me to a shoe that helped a good deal.

I switched to Brooks. Actually went to their HQ in Seattle. Their shoes are designed by engineers and medical peeps that actually run marathons and stuff.

I've been using them for 5 years now. The adrenaline model is where I settled at. I love them especially because of the price point and color options.
 
I did the running store thing once and found out I pronate a bit so I'm definitely going with something with support. I ended up with Asics that did well at the time.

But that was 10 years ago. The joints can't take the impact like they used to. So my biggest need is something to absorb impact.

Definitely going to keep Brooks on the radar. Maybe look into some of their more cushioned rides.
 
I ended up going to a running store and doing the whole fitting thing. I tried Brooks but they felt a little firmer than I was wanting. Ended up with Hoka Bondi 8s. They gave me the best impact absorption.

Naturally, just when I'm getting back into a solid running routine I pick up a nasty chest cold which has sidelined me. That's how it always seems to work.
 
Running form is the most important thing.

Don’t stand up too straight. Have a slight lean forward and MOST IMPORTANTLY make sure you are falling on the balls of your feet. Your calves are the shock absorbers of your body and you’ll need to take advantage of that.

The next step is to focus on breathing. This is the hardest part but once your form settles and you build some endurance only your breathing technicque will allow you to break the 5-10-15 mile thresholds.

Nice you can get on top of it, you can go as far as your endurance can stand.

It seems like such a simple concept. We’ve been breathing since born. But to do it right requires significant mental investment. But it’s a game changer when it becomes natural.
 
One thing I've struggled with for a long time is stamina. I can lift heavy, but I can't lift for reps to spare my life. I'm in recovery right now because of I think a pinch nerve in my hip. But before hand I could pull a 350 deadlift in a 3x3. But I struggle to do any like 12 plus reps without going way the hell down. I can't really figure it out.

Reps and shoulders are the 2 things I hate. I'm working on shoulders slowly. But yeah, I cannot figure out the rep lifting to save my life.
 
Full breath before every rep or every two.

Shoulders wear out fast vs legs and don’t come back as fast. Could also be a lactic acid issue

I've wondered about lactic acid, I've always had bad DOMS, though that usually only lasts very short for me.
 
Have you tried dropping 20% in weight? Then building up?

I rarely ever lifted heavy. I was always about lean muscle.

There’s not much truth to that. They just told that to women do they wouldn’t bulky.

You need to lift heavy simply to cause a growth reaction.

Sets of 5x5 still rule.

But at times a 5x1 or 5x2 are really good for core and bracing

I made my weight lifting as much of an aerobic exercise as possible by incorporating HIIT principles. I would be drenched with be combinations of 3-4 exercises in a set.

I bulked a little in my early 20's but since I refused to ever take anything other than WHEY I never saw the gains that others did. Then I got into running and only cared about being lean.
 
1.5 -2g protein per Lb of body weight

It ain’t easy as it sounds

My friend who's a pretty avid lifter (kind of guy who never really had problems, except for the time he tore his pec) and he eats like a cow to bulk up. He struggles to stay above like 160. He was always jealous of my ability to ramp up strength really fast, I was always jealous of his ability to just never gain unwanted weight.
 
Yeah chicken, Turkey, skim milk, egg whites, rice broccoli are all your best friends when it comes to lean protein intake.

They make really good protein shakes these days too. And that powdered peanut additive can help flavor anything.
