Official 2023 Playoff Thread

Funny that some here were saying you need guys throwing 100 out of the pen to win in the playoffs, then the diamondbacks come in with relatively soft tossers and beat the team full of flame throwers

Umm... more like you overachieved to even be in the situation you were in. Your rotation is mediocre. Your defense is trash. Offense is good not great. Philly will fall back into mediocrity within 2 years.

It does feel better. But the reality of it, IMO, is that this is the offseason we need to make some additions.

The bullpen will need a significant make over. We need at least 1, if not 2 starting pitchers. LF needs to be addressed. The bench needs to the addressed, especially if Lopez is let go.

Sting is lessened but yeah. It was a disappointing end to the season. Last year I feel like we were still coming off the World Series high. But this year sucked. We had an amazing team and just **** the bed. Lots of room for improvement.

The other sad reality is that we're (and I include myself) acting like a bunch of jilted high school girls. We've gotten absolutely steamrolled in consecutive years by Phillies teams that finished a combined 30 games behind us. We've got to make the changes you've mentioned. It'd also be nice if we'd stop acting like beta puppies against Philly when serious money is on the table.

I kind of disagree that there is a lot of room for improvement. This team had a historically great offense. The pitching was strong as well but got derailed for the most part by injuries. For most of the reason the bullpen was a strength as well. As we can see from the world series matchup, the playoffs continue to be a total crapshoot that are impossible to plan for. So while I agree there are moves to be made, not sure anything needs to be done just for the sake of planning for a better postseason next year.
 
You will never take the randomness out of baseball. But baseball can lessen that by setting up the playoff differently. Make it harder for weak ass teams to just get hot and win it all. Right now the World Series winner is t the best team over 6 months. It is just the hottest team over 4 weeks.

The offense will be fine. Even without an upgrade to LF. Still a lot of uncertainity in the rotation and bullpen imo.
 
It is a bit ironic that team needs arms most after what we saw the offense do in October.

I also think the "the playoffs are a crapshoot" defense is flimsy at best, and is the type of thing I expect losers to say. I'm not going to be a boomer and claim I know the secret sauce for a team to play well in October, but I refuse to believe the Astros consistently playing well in the playoffs is pure luck. The difference in attitude/demeanor/intensity/whatever between the Braves championship team and the previous 2 early exits were glaringly obvious to anyone watching. In 2021 the Braves were the fired up team on the rail the entire game, while in 2022/2023 they were sitting around like it was a day game in July.

Something involving the intensity of the situation just doesn't seem to be there, but I have no idea what it is or how to address it.

The faillies were the most intense club remaining. They were even excited when Marsh rolled in his sewage water before games.

The biggest problem I saw was not direction no leadership. Guys treated it like a July game. No one had a plan when they went to the plate. Just assumed natural talent would excel. We know the dinosaurs managing the club weren’t going to do anything. But even with all that you can’t discount randomness in every game. 110 that doesn’t have the right launch angle is worse than Nick castration 99 with the perfect launch angle.

The Braves knocked wheeler around but couldn’t touch him in the playoffs. Now swinging at pitches in the dirt and at your eyes sort of gives a pitcher a lot of places to get you out.

I say pitching because of the relivers that are going to FA, in addition, not knowing what you will get from guys coming back from injury. Also with Fried, that elbow scares the hell out of me. I feel like this is the offseason AA has to get a ToR starter. But IDK where he gets one.

Regarding the offense, we are locked in at pretty much every position. Only LF and SS are the upgrade areas. We've got the talent, hopefully they don't **** the bed 3 years in a row.
