Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

I’m sure boomers would scream about realignment just like they cry about all change, but the fact of the matter is there’s no point to keeping the NL and AL separate anymore.

Man you sure do like to think about what the boomers would think about stuff.

I don't see it happening. MLB owners hold onto tradition pretty ****ing hard.

Honestly I think it would be awesome.

8 divisions, each division winner is seeded into a best of 7 playoff to determine the World Series champion.

SPitballing assuming Portland.

SE mentioned already

North East - Toronto, Boston, New York, New York

Mid Atlantic - Philly, Pittsburgh, Washington, Baltimore

Midwest - Guardians, Reds, Tigers Cardinals

Other midwest - Twins, Brewers, Cubs, White Sox

South West - Diamondbacks, Rangers, Vegas, Astros
California - The 4 teams from cali
Northwest - Royals (sorry Royals, you're odd man out) Mariners, Rockies, Portland (also would work for Salt Lake City)

Largely agree. I think MLB needs to add two teams and go to either 4 divisions of 8 or 8 divisions of 4 (as you have laid out). Eight playoff pariticpants with all series being seven games.

I'm old and sports have changed so much in my lifetime (NFL used to be RB-centric. NBA used to be big man's game. Expanded playoffs established in all sports.), that I don't mind baseball shaking things up. There's always going to be some tension around who plays whom in other divisions or leagues (unless every team plays every other team in at least one series), but that can probably be ironed out to some extent. Someone who believes they deserve to be in the playoffs will always be sitting home and finding some angle to justify their gripe.

Manfred, for better or worse, seems to not mind shaking things up in MLB. Look at the implementation of the new rules. I’m not sure Selig would have done all that. That’s why I think this is plausible to see this radical realignment. The thing I disagreed with in that Forbes article is that they put expansion teams in both Nashville and Charlotte. I don’t see two that close. I thinking Nashville and either Salt Lake City or Portland

You could flip Vegas and the Royals and get a little more geographic balance.

I have no problem leaving the leagues alone as is but they've been changed and prodded over so much. Eastern and Western conferences would probably actually strengthen some natural rivalries and encourage new ones and could bring back some of the old novelty of "my league vs. your league."

The Cards may be looking to trade away an OFer, and Tyler O’Neil may be a good target. He’s controlled for 1 more year at around $5M, is a RHH, and plays Duvall-ish quality defense. He could be a cheap trade target to fill the role as a platoon partner and/or 4th OFer.

Please not Portland unless they get a dome. All it does is rain there.

I am more convinced than ever the Braves should go after Yamamoto. We dont lose any draft picks for signing him. We would lose our 2nd and 5th pick if we sign a player that got a qualifying offer. He is only in his mid 20's so we would be getting his prime years. Probably going to take 30+ million over 6+ years but I dont think a better option will come around. I would probably offer a similar deal to Fried and let him turn it down first just so its clear re-signing him was never an option.

The more I look at it, the more I feel like Tyler Glasnow should be our top target this offseason. They Rays have indicated that they are willing to have the payroll go up in 2024. However, if they don't make any moves, their opening day payroll for 2024 will be around $130MM. That is $51MM (40%) more than opening day payroll for 2023. Glasnow is in the final year of his contract and will make $25MM. I'm sure the Rays would like to cut cost, but still get MLB talent in return.

Would Grissom, and one of Smith-Shawver or Waldrep get the deal done? Too much? Too little. ...

It's said they would prefer to have clarity on the Glasnow situation sooner rather than later so they can round out their roster the rest of the offseason. AA seems to like to strike early, then extend.

AJSS or waldrep would sting, but guess it will take a sting to get a quality player like glasnow

100% but Glasnow is a legit ToR starter. They are not available every day.

Also, we'd only be adding around $5m net to the payroll if Morton retires. If he stays on board, we would have a strong rotation.

Fried
Glasnow
Strider
Morton
Elder/ AJSS or Waldrep/ Soroka / Dodd/ Schuster / Ynoa or Anderson down the line

Watching the Cardinals this off-season will be interesting. From my point of view, their collapse this season was one of the most surprising things in all of baseball. Maybe they were a bit of a mirage as contenders, but they flat-out stunk. A number of players that other teams will be inquiring about.

O'Neill is arbitration-eligible, so he may well be non-tendered. Has played some CF (doesn't look like that well). Had a monster year in 2021, but has been banged up a lot since. The much-heralded yet-to-truly-arrive Dylan Carlson is in the same boat. Switch-hitter who has great splits against LHP and has played more CF (but not particularly well either). Cardinals have a ton of OFs and there going to have to shuffle things up.

DOB said yesterday that AJSS and Waldrep were as untouchable as it gets on our team so who knows. I don’t think that AA will give one of them up for a rental especially one that injury prone but he is a TOR starter.

I’d agree. I’d love to get Sonny Gray but he’ll be given a QO and we’d lose the 2nd and 5th pick and AA isn’t doing that. Yamamoto is as legit as they come and at 25 years old will have everybody after him. The Yankees and Dodgers will go balls out to get the guy but I’m hoping AA can get him somehow.
