McDaniels is a good OC. Being a good OC doesn't mean you're a good coach. Most people who're hired to be a coach will be a bad hire.

Some successful NFL coaches come from a variety of places

Andy Reid - QB Coach
Belichick - DC
Siriani - OC
SHanahan - OC
McVay - OC
Tomlin - DC
Harbaugh - DB/Special Teams Coach
McDermott - DC
Carroll - DC
McDaniel - OC
Payton - QB Coach/OC

Like there's a lot of guys who did a variety of things. But also some of the most successful coordinators were bad coaches. Wade Phillips, Dom Capers, and Cam Cameron all were great coordinators who couldn't hack it as head coaches.

Problem with exotic plays in the NFL is while they can work, they also can just fail because of how talented NFL defenders are.

I'm less high on McDaniels play calling but there are plenty examples of coordinators who had extremely talented units make them look good.

As for exotic plays, there is definitely a place for them. But they need to be used sparingly and in the right situations. If you're looking at a 4th and one, 999 times out of 1000, the best play will be something fairly mundane. Hand the ball off to the HB, have the QB sneak it, quick slant, something like that. About as exotic as you should get is a play action shot trying to catch the defense sleeping.

Smith also draws up plays that I hesitate to call exotic because I think that gives them too much credit. He draws up plays trying to be creative but too often the plays are pretty badly flawed. One of Smith's big problems is his creative plays often take WAAAAY too long to develop or have way too many moving parts. The NFL is so fast you have to streamline your plays. The more moving pieces and the longer things take to develop, the greater the risk that the defense blows the play up.

Smith needs to learn the best way to show he's the smartest guy on the field is for his team to score more than the other team. There are not style points in the NFL.

Arthur Smith is going down in flames. He not only keeps making in game mistakes, he keeps doing more and more to antagonize the press while taking no accountability. All in all, exactly what you'd expect hiring a pampered son of a billionaire.

Reminds me so much of the Patricia years in Detroit

Bought into his own genius way too much

That's Smith. Dude is convinced he's always the smartest guy in the room and is obsessed with showing everyone just how smart he is.

Problem is that he's actually pretty dumb.

The Giants/Raiders game was on when I was out for dinner, by gawd that was a **** show. Giants are ****ing horrible. Raiders are terrible and they're spanking the Giants.

Seriously what is wrong with this dude?

I could make a couple hundred of these about Sean Payton and he is considered one of the smartest offensive coaches in the game. Heres just one example.

Saints are down 40-42. The Saints have a historically bad defense and given up Touchdowns on the last 3 offensive possessions by the other team. Saints have the ball at midfield and its 4th and 1 with Drew Brees at QB back when he could throw the ball more than 5 yards. Theres 2:30 left in the 4th quarter. Do you A - go for it on 4th and 1 with your elite offense or B- punt the ball and hope your historically bad defense gets a 3 and out. If you chose option B you might be Sean Payton. And he has done this with only minor variables in the details about 15 times. Spoiler, it worked out to our favor once. When Sheldon Rankins forced a fumble against the Steelers.

I think Arthur is smart and talented, but this is a troubling trend.

The move I think about it, the more I am with Striker in that Smith just has zero clue how to properly utilize the current weapons on the Falcons. I think he's a bright guy, but it seems he would rather utilize guys he thinks fit his offense best, rather than make his offense fit the talent that he actually has.

No objection from me. I haven’t followed the Falcons much this year, but it’s weird how much Tyler Allgeir, Jonnu Smith and Mack Hollins I see in the box score. There’s just no justification for the lack of engagement 3 top 10 picks have in your offense (that’s not very good).

I like Arthur’s play designs. I think he’s clever, but the game plans have been really really bad.

I really don't like a lot of his play designs. The cute stuff he's been trying with Jonnu has been eye rolling bad. He really struggles with the passing game too. His plays take too long to develop and he constantly leaves receivers in traffic or else all bunched up together.

I've also read some chatter that his offense might be too complicated. Genius is in simplicity, not complexity.

I could see the “too complicated” thing. His run schemes are really cool when they work, but it seems like a lot of moving pieces.

I’m sure Artie gets fired this year and I definitely could see him end up as an OC somewhere and being successful.
