Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Young pitching. You can't bet on it and you can't bet against it.

Front office and field staff has done a pretty good job of shielding guys. They have aggressively moved guys and appear to be alright with throwing guys in there who don't have a reliable third pitch. It's one of the changes in eras because that was rarely the case until the last decade or so. With teams using the bullpen earlier than in previous eras, you can protect younger pitchers and cobble things together over the season, but like Hudson2 says, that doesn't really fly in the post-season.

Someone is going to have to step up or they are going to need another solid mid-rotation guy. Maybe Elder takes the next step, but the analysis kind of points to him being who he is and what he will remain. Not a high ceiling there (at least in my estimation). If they get a solid #3, Morton and Elder each kick down a spot and you've got a really good rotation.

Agree with the young pitching. I don't think there's a single pitcher in that group that can be counted on as a sure thing but I think the group is strong enough as a whole to provide a number 5 starter and potentially better.

I just don't want to be stuck paying long term TOR money for MOR/BOR pitching. That's a risk with most of the top pitching options.

Anthopoulos' pattern has been to let the market shake out before making a bigger move. He's signed guys like Hamels and Smyly early, which was pointed out the other day, but that was primarily to bolster the back end of the rotation. What he has ahead of his this off-season is more challenging because we've got a busload of guys who can do the #4 or #5 permanently or in shifts. He's going to be looking for a #3 and I'm sure enscheff is tired of pointing it out, but it's likely there will be someone available at a Term/AAV that fits Anthopoulos' preferred way of doing business.

But is that #3 pitcher someone who needs to be signed long term before the season or would a deadline addition to fortify the playoff roster be a more practical approach.

LF is still an open hole on the roster that needs to be addressed somehow as well

DOB saying that the Braves are planning to move Grissom to LF and use the savings on a front line starting pitcher. If they do they better have a good backup.

Compared to the poor FA options in LF, giving Grissom a shot out there for a few months isn’t a terrible idea. I suspect AA will be shopping for an OFer at the 2024 deadline though.

I think Grissom could be a 20+ homer bat in LF with a .280 average or better. The defense is what worries me. As long as we have a good defensive replacement for late in the game then just give him a shot.

Sorry to hear, man. Get yourself better!

He hit 8 HRs in almost 500 AAA PAs, and had the lowest exit velocities of almost all Braves hitters, so I’m not sure where the 20 HR power is going to come from.

He’s probably a .280/.350/.400 bat at the MLB level, and that’s pretty weak for LF. If that’s what it takes to get Yama in a Braves uniform it may be ok to punt LF for a few months.

I think people are forgetting that after his initial hot streak, Grissom has also been pretty awful with the bat... he cooled off dramatically at the end of 2022 and then started 2023 awful before he was sent back down. When he briefly came back up, he wasn't hitting either. He's only hit in the minors and not for much power... but if you say so. I think Grissom in LF is a terrible idea that won't work out for very long.

No clue why I thought he had more power than he does. But I agree that if it gets us Yamamoto then sign me up.

LF should be one of the easier positions to fill at the trade deadline. Grissom in LF hopefully means we are using the savings on a top of the rotation SP.

Oh man. Just now seeing this. Prayers for a speedy recovery.

If we aren't going to trade Grissom, we might as well see what he can do in LF. He also gives you some flexibility defensively as he can back up 2b and can technically man SS for a few innings in a pinch (though I don't imagine he would ever be called upon to do that).

Honestly wouldn't mind seeing what we have in Nicky Lopez at SS instead of Arcia. Short sample size, but his peripherals improved significantly while his BABIP was basically at league average. Legit could be a ~5 WAR SS if that offense he showed with us is legit.

Ken Rosenthal wrote an article on the Athletic today saying we are willing to spend on a starter, and he links us to Nola. Also points out that Snell and Burnes are Boras guys, and Nola is not. Considering we don’t have a Boras guy on the roster, that could matter. He also mentions Nola’s connection with Kranitz and the fact that he’s from Louisiana and may prefer to be in the south.

Either way, looks like we are going to get another high profile starter. Still would feel weird to pay a 30-year-old Nola and then let Fried walk at 30 next offseason, but we’ll see.
