Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Seeing the money spaced out like this does make me a bit nervous we are a bit tapped out this year. That's despite the rumor of an offer we made to Nola.

AA literally purged the bottom of the roster. I guess he could sign some guys to minor league deals. But if he offered 6/162 to Nola, he has plenty of money to offer. Putting two and two together, i dont think he's anywhere near done or on some low budget. If he's locking up BP pieces before Thanksgiving.

I think the 2 things holding up a Gray deal he probably wants 4 years and the loss of picks and international money. He’s a perfect Morton replacement.

I really hope Gray isn't the guy. With Yamamoto, Stroman, Rodriguez, etc. out there, I don't see the need to damage the draft and international pools. The primary need and available pitchers both favor depth signings over top end additions this year.

Agree.

For me Yamamoto is the play but I’d be willing to pivot to Bauer as well.
If you strike out on both, pick up Stroman, add Giolito on a 1 year prove it/ build your value deal and then turn to fixing LF and your bench.

Off-season done.

I can squint and see the allure of Nola due his excellent durability and best proven current talent in the FA class.

I can’t see the reason to prioritize Gray over most of the other guys, and I certainly don’t see why anyone would want to give up picks for him when other similar options are available.

Count me among those hoping AA doesn’t sign Gray.

Our buddy DOB is questioning whether the Braves would actually go over their current luxury tax level for a guy like Gray. He says the numbers are getting so high that venturing into the territory is unlikely and thinks Atlanta has legit plans to keep Lopez in the rotation

They’re already tax-payers.

He's the least informed beat writer I've ever seen.

If Bowman said it, it might mean something.

However, loading on relievers could suggest a willingness to make do in the rotation rather than overpay.

This does seem like a hedge.

I dont see the point in going slightly over the luxury tax. It would benefit us greatly to not go over to reset the penalties.

We can go over once, doing it twice is a problem. And we have alot of money off the books next year.

If we don't add a better starting pitcher, then prepare for the same outcome where we're having to cobble something together for a pivotal Game 3. Hopefully we're hitting this time.

I'm guessing AA would prefer the trade route.

Unless it’s for a really reasonable dollar amount. I just can’t see him giving Gray $22-25m for 3 years and also giving up all those assets. It’s not happening.

I’m not sure AA would sign 2 more starters but Montgomery makes a ton of sense given he’s a lefty and we’ll probably be losing Fried next year. Yamamoto and Montgomery would make us insanely dangerous.

Lopez has BP/SP flexibility. Yama isnt happening. I'd be okay with Monty, problem is the years. He's already 31, and probably wants 4-5 years. We do need another starter or we enter the same problem as last year.

Everyone is linking us to Gray. I like him, it's just the picks and loss of international pool money that might scare off AA. AA made a deep offer for Nola, i'm not sure he would for Gray. If he did, then he doesnt care about the loss of picks clearly.

Well, there's also the thought of having a starter to go next year once Morton assuming he pitches, retires, and Fried are gone next year. You basically have Strider and Elder next year if you go the trade route. I dont think Burnes would extend. If you could get him for pennies on the dollar, he's a fine play but he's not extending. I like Glasnow but he's hurt alot, and Rays usually fleece teams.

at least we actually have a number of high-end arms this time around to cobble together lmao

They're not going into the year with this rotation as is. AA will add someone else. Maybe it's not Gray, but there's plenty of guys on the market that he can get if he's offering 6/162 to Nola. Lopez is a good addition, as a flexible piece to the bullpen and rotation but he's not the lone addition. We also still need to add to the offense, need an infielder bench piece, and someone else for the outfield. As well as another starter even if it's not Gray.

The perfect FA pitcher doesn't exist out there. So to sign one of these free agents who might make a difference, something is going to have to be sacrificed – whether it's paying a guy like Montgomery or Stroman a little extra money, or giving a guy that extra guaranteed year, or losing a little international slot money, or being really bold and putting the highest bid in on Yamamoto.
