Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

I don’t remember rumors of Murphy since we already had D’Arnaud/Wild Bill tandem.

Olson rumors yes since Freddie opted to go into free agency and not extent.

I’ll try to find it, but a week or two before the Murphy trade, Mark Feinsand definitely reported we were the favorites. And we were all extremely confused, then the buzz died down and it went away until the deal happened later.

The #Braves today signed RHP Penn Murfee and RHP Jackson Stephens to one-year, non-guaranteed split contracts for the 2024 season.

I think Whit Merrifield for 1 year with a club option is not bad. He play LF and he can cover second just in case Albies go down. Not the greatest but a bench bat is not bad either.

Cease has a high spin FA with excellent rise. He is exactly the type of arm the Braves have been targeting. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see them win the bidding for him.

AJSS is like a poor man’s version of Cease stuff-wise, so he seems like a logical part of the return.

Right-hander Nick Martinez and the Cincinnati Reds are in agreement on a two-year, $26 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first year, sources tell ESPN. Martinez, 33, opted out of the last two years and $16 million of his deal with San Diego to reach free agency.

I will be mad as **** if we give up AJSS for Cease.

If AJS is the centerpiece, i'd be fine with that. He could be really good but the team is in win now mode, and we have quite a bit of pitching depth that should be ready by the start of next year in Waldrep, and some others down there. It would depend what the rest of the offer is.

I’m an AJSS fan but if it’s for Cease I’ll get over it especially if they can work out an extension with him. We should hear something by the end of the weekend I’d guess.

Heyman: Breaking: Top CF prospect Jackson Chourio, 19, and the Brewers are expected to complete today the richest contract ever for a player who has yet to reach the big leagues. The deal is expected to be for 8 guaranteed years snd close to $80M and include two team options.

Rosenthal wrote this morning that the White Sox are planning to hold Cease until after most of the free agent starters sign, hoping that'll make him more valuable to teams who still need pitching.

I call BS. That would be dumb on the WS part bc teams needing pitching won’t wait around and teams that could offer the most may move on to other options and now you’ve lost out on a possible big return. If the White Sox hold onto him and he has another bad season or gets hurt then they got screwed. Maybe they should talk to the Tigers and see what it’s like holding onto players to long.

His reasoning was that teams like the Reds and Orioles are in on Cease but wouldn't be in on the big money free agents, so they'll be involved no matter what. Definitely some risk involved, but it could pay off for them.

The timing of the report is interesting after Morosi said yesterday some people thought Cease could be dealt before the winter meetings start on Monday. Guess we'll see.
