Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Again, you're acting like Gonzales was some sort of significant acquisition... he was straight up filler considering he was never in their plans in the first place.

There's some wires crossed somewhere. I'm stating the opposite of Gonzales being a significant acquisition. I'm saying he was a guy that was only included for the Mariners to clear salary. He wasn't in our plans and he's not the kind of pitcher AA likes. Trading him away had no meaning other than AA wanted to clear as much of his salary as he could. Again, it was in response to someone speculating there was some greater meaning to the trade.

My bad if I misunderstood

Heyman says teams who have talked to the Brewers thinks there's a decent chance Burnes gets moved this offseason. Worth noting that he's a free agent next offseason and a Boras client.

I wouldn't call Cheerios a flame thrower by any measure, but 93 isn't a soft tosser either. Kind of middle ground.

As for the others, a couple of them fall into that middle ground as well. Hamels was 91.6 on the fastball the year before we signed him and Odorizzi was at 92.2. Not blazing fast but not Gonzales who has been 88-89 on the fastball the last 5 years.

Felix Hernandez and Anibal Sanchez were signed to a minor league deals.

Milone was a soft tosser but he had K'd 40 in 39 IP when we traded for him. But he's another of those minor filler pieces. We got him for a PTBNL.

AA, like any GM, will acquire soft tossers when they make sense but they're definitely not who he likes to target when he has a choice. I completely agree with his strategy of focusing on stuff and missing bats.

91-92 is a soft tosser dude.

What about Yonny Chirinos? Dallas Keuchel was also about the same type of pitcher when we signed him... AA has a high velocity type he loves, but he signs plenty of soft tossers

Winans as well. I think the analytics team looks at a lot of different approaches as long as they result in certain benchmarks.

From a Chicago radio personality: The asking price for Sox pitcher Dylan Cease is very high ,and should be for two yrs control and $8 mil-contract.The Reds were asked for 4 top prospects including RHP Rhett Lowder and RHP Chase Petty. #9 and #11 position prospects as well.Sox will get more as market shakes out.

This could be why we're not as interested in Cease as has been reported, assuming Bowman is right.

I think Eduardo Rodriguez make more sense. We don’t need a top of the rotation starter yet. We need a number 3. Just wait until next year or mid season for any top of the rotation player. Let’s keep our prospects.

Add Rodriguez
Maybe work a deal for Willy Adames.
Fill out the bench with decent players.

Morosi:

News: Juan Soto trade to the Yankees is now "close to being finalized," source confirms.

If completed, Michael King and Drew Thorpe -- along with additional players -- will go to San Diego.

Morosi: Ohtani to decide by the end of the weekend.

Sounds like things should be moving once Ohtani derby is over, and teams will use their money on other players.

Seems like a pretty hefty price for 1 year of Soto. I guess they are confident they can re-sign him.

Yankees might do well to make this trade and get him his extension immediately. Cause Ohtani might reset the market.

Saw where the Mets signed Jose Iglesias to a minor league deal. Sure wish we could have made that move. Sure seems like a pretty terrific back-up SS and we have zero depth there.

Could not get a MLB gig all of last year. Not sure why you'd be thrilled .

Because we have zero depth at SS for one, and we need a back-up SS. Secondly, he's a much better defender and at least equal of a hitter to Ehire Adrianza. He posted at least 1 win every year between 2018.and 2022. It's likely Iglesias could man SS for an extended period and not be a SVOD. Not saying he'd be remotely close to starter quality, but he'd be a significantly better option than Adrianza if something happened to Arcia.

I have to think SS depth is something on AA's radar.

Free agent LHP Eduardo Rodriguez, who met with clubs at the Winter Meetings, is down to two teams and is expected to have a decision by tomorrow.

He makes a ton of sense for Baltimore, no idea if they'd spend though.
