Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

The move to make, if the trade price is just too crazy, is to grab one of these free agent starters on a reasonable deal. That should not be difficult to accomplish. You make the move now because you inevitably will have another need in the summer that you’re not anticipating. There is going to be at least one injury, and at least a couple of guys will underperform.

As Scheff has said, there's alot of #3 types on the FA market. There's no excuse for him not to get one if he had the money to take on the White/Stassi/Gonzalez/Fletcher deals just to get Kelenic. Plus signing Lopez/Johnson/Jimenez for nearly 20M this year, on top of taking on Bummer's deal. Or get someone via trade.

Everyone knows we need another SP, it's a big failure if AA doesnt get one. Doesnt even have to be an ace, that's next year's need.

Gray would have been the target had he not had the QO attached. Next year there are several ace’s available but we'll have to bid against all the usual suspects to male that happen and its not AA’s MO to get into a bidding war. If AA can get 1 of the 2 SP we’ll need next year locked down this offseason then we’ll only need 1 next offseason. Jordan Montgomery makes the most sense imo bc he’s a lefty and has no QO attached. Not sure what his price is but id guess 5 years. Maybe AA can get him to 4.

All of the moves AA has made this offseason are pretty good moves individually. It’s the combination of all those moves that I question, especially if he now can’t afford someone like Stroman.

Does the BP really need $50M of non-elite arms? Was Kelenic and Fletcher really worth all that player movement when Rosario and Nicky were already in place? As long as AA still has the resources for that #3 SP it was a very good offseason for the Braves.

The Kelenic deal may turn into gold, and was a good risk to take, but it should be acknowledged it wasn’t free. A lot of players and salary had to move around to make it happen, while the Dodgers simply signed Heyward and probably got the exact same thing.

A lot of nothing (minus López).

What you mean exact same thing?

The Braves say they can fix Kelenic and i believe them. That move can pay huge dividends and be another middle of the order bat. Hopefully the market picks up next week a AA gets the SP we need.

The most likely outcome for Kelenic is he turns into something approximating Rosario/Verdugo/Kepler/Heyward. Obviously we all hope he turns into a 3-4 win guy who AA then extends for 6 years at a 20% discount, but that’s not the most likely outcome.

Those guys but cheaper and younger. I’ll take it.

The Braves are indirectly paying roughly the same for Kelenic that they would have for the guys I mentioned. And I’m not sure where this narrative came from that he’s a better defender than that group of guys.

86 percentile arm strength and grades out with above average range in the COF the last two years. I think he’s a pretty safe bet to be a plus defender while he’s young.

I didn’t say he wouldn’t be good. I said he’s not likely better than the group I listed, all of whom would be surer bets to produce in 2024.

The next counterpoint that actually follows a logical thought process would be: “Kelenic may not require a platoon partner, which could make him a more valuable everyday player”.

Ohtani reportedly got paid 40 million in endorsements last year. Dude is likely to make 100+ million a year with his contract and endorsements......

And he wouldn't get nearly the amount of endorsements if he went to Toronto. The idea that he was ever going anywhere but the Dodgers was asinine.

The Dodgers are making an investment as well. They're going to be Japan's team essentially the way the Mariners were for many years then the Yankees when Matsui was there.
