Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

After reading through the last few pages of this thread, we need to be reminded that we didn’t lose the playoff series because of pitching.

When we say, depending on unproven pitchers didn’t work out too well…

The pitching we had was good enough to win if the hitters had performed at all.

I am good with getting another good pitcher, but struggle with the narrative that last year didn’t work out because of pitching.

Not sure how you figure that. Their number 3 beat our 1 twice. Our pitching was smoke and mirrors all year after Strider and giving Max a pass because of injury. Morton doesn't scare anybody anymore and Elder is fine if he gets run support. AA needs to find this team's version of Maddux. Turn a pair of aces into a Big Three before the window shuts.

Rosenthal had an interesting note on Ohtani's contract. There's a clause that says "If specific change in Dodger personnel, player may opt out of contract at end of season the change occurs." Rosenthal says he doesn't know who that refers to.

Gonna have to agree and disagree. The offense took a massive dump. No one is gonna argue that. However… the game Elder started was as must win as they come. You can’t trot out Elder in a game that important. It made the game over after like the 3rd inning.

Dodgers are making a big pitch to get Yamamoto to join them. With Ohtani trying to bring him in i dont see them not getting him. Buehler was hurt last year bit will be back so Buehler, Yamamoto, and possibly Glasnow would be a good trio.

AA isnt gonna use assets to trade for a guy with just 1 year of control and be in the same boat next year so to me that leaves Burnes and Glasnow out. Cease is the only trade candidate that moves the needle and probably Yamamoto, Snell, and Montgomery from the FA pool.

Seriously you think Jordan Montgomery worth it?

Just because the hitters slept through October doesn't mean the pitching was fine.

Strider went 7 giving up 1 run
Fried went 4 giving up 3 runs
Elder went 2.2 giving up 6 runs
Strider went 5.2 giving up 3 runs

The Braves played 4 games that mattered, and only 2 of them were started by a legit front end starter who wasn't coming off injury. The best team on the planet started Bryce Elder in the playoffs...think about that.

So yes, the Braves needed more SP, just like some of us were screaming about at the deadline...just like they do right this moment. If AA spent $50M building a BP full of 7th inning guys and fails to land a legit #3, he made a mistake this offseason.

I’m not upset that the Braves didn’t sign Lugo specifically.

It’s just concerning that the most glaring weakness for the team going into the winter (starting pitching depth) is the only area of the team that hasn’t been addressed.

You aren't necessarily concerned with depth I do t think if you are concerned. Sounds more like you are concerned about strength at the 3/4.

What concerns me is Frieds elbow and Mortons age. If those 2 go down then AA will rush Waldrep and AJSS. And at the deadline youre gonna have to trade as much then as you would have now and gotten a full season out of them. And Hula, saying you'd take Elder over Cease is one of the dumbest things i’ve ever seen on this board. He is a clear 2 at worst.

If those guys get hurt then Lugo or Cease isn't really going to fix it.

It’s both. I don’t think we have a reliable 5th starter at the moment. I think we have limited options to join the rotation if someone gets hurt.

That is compounded with the fact that Charlie at his age leaves us really vulnerable at 3/4.

Both problems are addressed by adding a legitimate number 3.

He was excellent last year (4.3 fWAR) and very good the two years before… depends on the years but yeah he’s certainly worth 2-3 starter money easily.

Montgomery checks a lot of Braves boxes, just a matter of whether some dumb team pays him for in line with just his heroics.

The Dodgers are the 21st century Yankees.

They sent 3 MVPs who are future Hall of Famers in their prime to convince Yamamoto to sign.

It's a Dodger Blue world, and we're all just living in it.

Difference is, the Yankees actually won championships.

Lol do what?? Cease is a #2 starting pitcher and was a TOR starter 2 years ago. He is a ton better than Morton. As the rotation is Cease would be the #3 and next year when Fried is gone he’d slot in the 2 spot easy.

I mean, they’ll make it better? You’re not going to replicate Fried pretty much no matter what, but I’d much rather see Lugo or Cease on the mound in an important game than Elder.

Last year in the second half I’d have taken Maddux out of retirement over Elder
