2025-2026 offseason thread

But seriously, it's a three-year deal with opt outs after each year. Low-key, that's awful, especially for a dude who has to adjust to MLB.

Astros did what they had to to land him. It a bad contract for them but he is in the building and they can renegotiate with him if he is lights out. I wouldn’t have been upset if the Braves did that deal.

I’m going to assume AA had an offer on the table for more years, less per year, and no opt outs.

The Astros are either getting a legit SP for 1 year, or a terrible pitcher for 3 years. The silver lining for them is the absolute downside of $54M can’t be disastrous.

Those $150M+ projections were waaaay off base.

How are player options negative for teams? Is that the question?
Yes. If he opts out then that means he had a really good year for the team. It’s a win for that team and you got that player at a discount relative to the next contract.

Yes. That’s a good outcome for the team.

A better outcome is he has a good year and he’s locked into a long term contract at a discount.

A bad outcome is he’s utter trash (or gets injured) and now he opts into the rest of the contract.
