Minor League Thread Part Deux

I really wanna believe in Gil, but his numbers have fallen off...

.233 BA
.784 ops

It's really early, but I was hoping he was gonna take off

Dude… the year has barely started… he has like ~30+ plate appearances. Still has great BB and K rates. Talk about a knee jerk reaction
Hey, I hope so. Just don't like a 4/20 week when I'm being told he gonna have a meteoric rise. He's still very young, so I'm not saying he won't be good.

He’s still hitting the crap out of the ball with great BB and K rates

The average age in A+ ball is 22.7

Gil is just about to turn 20…

Dude had a .900+ OPS yesterday. You’re being a little ridiculous

I'm sorry. Is someone complaining that our 19 year old prospect in High A is only hitting 36% better than league average?
Hey, hopefully he can maintain that wrc+ over a season bc he hasn't at any level yet. When I look at why Riley, Harris, Acuna, and Ozzie did in the lower levels, they were putting up some 150+ wrc+ seasons.

I'm probably just worried bc I bought into the hype job we were sold on him, and after a hot start, he's trending back to where he's always been. Yall are right (and I said as much) that he's still young and the season is early. Hopefully his numbers trend back up over the next couple weeks. Just until I see him put up a monster offensive season, I'm off the he's-the-next-great-one train. And with him outgrowing SS, his numbers need to look more like Riley's did

Acuna same age same level 136 RC+ with only 3 homers in 28 games. Gil has 2 in 8 games. Albies never had a 150+ RC+ at any level above Rookie ball. Riley put up a 110 RC+ at the same level but 1 year older. MH missed his whole age 19 year. Then at 20 put up a 122 RC+ at High A. And didnt have a 150 RC+ at any level other than rookie ball,

1. Those guys did not play SS. Well technically Ozzie did, but that was never going to work out. If Gil was a RFer or a 3b, people wouldn't be quite as high on him.

2. If Gil were already putting up 150 wRC+ seasons in the minors as a SS at his age, he'd be a consensus top 10 prospect in baseball. Not even Jesus Made or Sebastian Walcott have sustained that level of play over a full season in the minors, and both of those guys are consensus top 10 prospects.

3. It's unlikely Gil has the offensive ceiling of most of those guys you listed, save Ozzie and maybe Harris, depending on what version of Harris we are talking about. But that's ok. Gil can be a ~110 wRC+ hitter and still be a 4+ fWAR SS given his speed and defense. Not every prospect has to have an elite offensive profile to be considered a high end prospect.

Yall are probably right, but it's been pretty speculate he will outgrow SS, so I think he needs more offense

Fine, Ozzie was 149 wrc+ at AA age 19

I don't see many people saying that. He has legitimate 70 grade speed and more than enough arm.
Not to join in with a long dissertation on the Gil conversation, but it’s here, so the only thing I will say is that more than enough arm is probably more like 'enough.'. I think he has an average arm enough for a short stop but if you ask me, he should be moved to second base. I think his game is average enough at shortstop but that’s just my opinion and I’m sure most of you guys are really high on him from what I can tell.

I think if you look at some of the eye test reports that I’ve done last year, I was probably pretty lower than most, but that had more to do with his power, not necessarily anything other with his game. His speed is truly a game changer because it’s easy speed. He’s come a long way from his rookie days where he was a slap hitter, albeit line drives. He’s gotten much more lift, his exit velocity is above average and stabilizing. So there is more than enough to like about Gil, but to me, he’s got time to project even better hit tools.

It's too early for every game reactions 😂😂😂, but in States defense, there are adjustments that Gil will need to make. As most of the Braves prospects will have to do as they advance. In Gil's case, he's trending up.

Southisene doing some good things to start the year. K rate has nearly been cut in half from a year ago and the BB rate is sky high at 17%. Showing good pop as well.
I commented early this year that they moved his hands up and he was spraying line drives all over the place. Gotta love that improved walk trend as well.
