Let's assume there will be < 60 game regular season

developmental issues are shared by all clubs. Teams with bad farms don't care. Teams with ok farms don't worry because everyone else is in the same boat. Teams with close players, but deficient ML clubs may see this as a way to legit keep guys down to gain another year of control while they sort...

Let's assume there will be < 60 game regular season

ISWYD Of course, no one predicted a pandemic. I did predict that it was likely that the Braves would lose a season or more of Freeman's value before his contract was up. I was thinking it likely would be injury.

Let's assume there will be < 60 game regular season

Not so. Teams who are rebuilding and/or have bad contracts see this as a way to mitigate past mistakes. Look at Detroit. They aren't competing under any circumstances. They have a couple of horrific contracts in Cabrera and Zimmerman that skipping 2020 helps fix, at least somewhat. Their best...

Let's assume there will be < 60 game regular season

Off days? Travel Days? Double headers (after all, if there are no fans...)? Regionalized schedule? Day games? Night games? Roster size? IL rules? etc. etc.

MLB optimistic about starting season in late June

I think for both sides it's less about what happens now and more about what happens for the next CBA. I don't think either side considers this to be the one-off situation that it truly is.

MLB suspends Astros GM and Manager for a year, yuge fine and takes away draft picks.

Manfred was a lawyer working as an agent. Different masters when he moved to ownership. Never understood who thought that was a good idea.

MLB optimistic about starting season in late June

Players didn't blink. Agreement in March gave the commissioner power to implement a season. Owners have said all they could do was a 50 game season if full prorated salaries are given - in other words, 50 full game checks for 50 full games instead of the guaranteed 70% of prorated for 72 games...

    The 2020 Draft Thread

I'm talking strategy not tactics. I'm suggesting that the Braves would like to have him but only at an extreme slot discount. If they don't get that, then they would be comfortable punting the pick until next year when they have better scouting and likely a deeper pool. I may be wrong in...

    The 2020 Draft Thread

Could be a play to underslot the max amount. If he doesn't take it, you get another pick next year. If he does, you get good value and have a possibility to turn a 3 into a 2, a 4 into a 3 and a 5 into a 4.

    The 2020 Draft Thread

If Bitsko makes it to the Braves, why not throw as much of the draft pool is necessary to get him. Sure, they would be giving up 3,4,5 BUT those guys are going to have greater than usual uncertainty anyway. If you really like a guy....

    MLBTR mock expansion draft

Yes, you can field a team with valuable players, but they still won't be good. Building a team that only loses 100 games instead of 110 games is really irrelevant. The idea is to build a foundation where you can get good and stay good for a while. To me, that would me drafting valuable players...

    MLBTR mock expansion draft

Yeah, I didn't see any real strategy. I mean, if the Dodgers left Price unprotected, which happened in this scenario, would a team not draft him then market him to other teams offering to pay down some of the cost. For instance, Price is owed $64M over the last two years of his contract. Would...

MLB optimistic about starting season in late June

I read it as players guaranteed 50% of pro-rated salary, not 50% of full season salary. So, if there is a 81 game season, then the players are guaranteed 50% of 50%.

    The 2020 Draft Thread

I agree with you. IMO, if you're going to take a tough sign do it in the first round. If you can't sign him then you get a replacement pick next year in what should be a deeper (lots of returning guys) and better scouted group. It's not like you lose a lot of development time since it's not...

    2021 Free-Agent Class

I would think the full year of service time for NO season is a big incentive for the ML owners to have a season. Otherwise, all players on your team accrue time just as if they were on IL for the entire season, which I guess is one way of looking at it. But, the owners lose a tremendous amount...

    2021 Free-Agent Class

I disagree that it isn't a major issue. It's potentially millions of dollars either way. If players get full service time, arbitration kicks in faster for players and they cost more. Argument could be made that age will take some off the field faster which will help even out the costs. But, with...

    2021 Free-Agent Class

Does anyone know what happens to service time if the season isn't played? For instance Dansby currently is listed with 3.047 years. Does he open next season with 4.047? 3.547? What? If they get service time, how does that affect arbitration? Lose some cheap years on Acuna and Albies... Also...

    MLBTR mock expansion draft

Didn't see that explicitly given in the article and couldn't remember from the last expansion draft. Would be more interesting if it was the whole organization...would probably hurt teams like the Dodgers the most, a lot of ML talent AND minor league talent.

    MLBTR mock expansion draft

I agree with you but would add that Inciarte would either be traded prior to setting the protected list OR would be left unprotected. The exercise as stated assumes certain players being around to be drafted. I think all teams, including Atlanta, would try to trade at risk pieces that have value...
