    2025 Spring Training Thread

Holmes has looked a little less effective to me this Spring than he was late last year, but still solid. With 3 to 4 usable pitches at the MLB level, I've got no real concerns with him meeting expectations as a backend starter.

I've seen 4 Drake Baldwin PAs so far this Spring, and man does he look confident and polished up there. Great approach and swing decisions.

You have to give $100K to take the player in the draft, and then you have to keep the player on the 26-man (active) roster for a full year to keep them. So it's a long shot from the word go. The Braves have an army of low-leverage relievers competing for just a few spots this year, so it seems...

First look at Rule 5 pick Anderson Pilar. More of a movement and location guy. FB touched 94. Up and down outing. When he missed over (or even near) the plate, the pitches looked pretty hittable. We'll see where things go from here, but just doesn't seem like a guy with much upside.

Saw Perdomo's inning and was pretty impressed. Dude is massive, but he has a really smooth delivery. 92-94 with the FB. I was thinking he'd be more of an "effectively wild" guy, but his command was good. A lot of awkward swings on the breaking stuff, and he faced 3 big league guys (Duran...

Braves just released the lineups for ST games 3 and 4, and still no sign of Albies or Profar. Hmm.

Man, Chad Kuhl looking quite good. The sweeper was as-advertised. FB 95-96. He was throwing another breaking pitch too . . . maybe a slider? I'm officially intrigued.

Couple other notes for those not able to follow the broadcast . . . - Eli White had a really nice fielding play at 2B (he's focusing in IF in camp to improve his versatility). - Holmes FB velo 93-95. In the zone a lot. Solo HR to Caminero came on a breaking ball in where he missed his...

It's obviously just his first Spring start, but for those of us who were concerned about Ian Anderson coming into the season, you're certainly not any less concerned after today. FB velo 91-93 and really struggled with his command. He had a couple nice-looking change ups, but the strikeout to...

The FG report from last Summer has him at 40 fielding and 60 throw. So not too bad, and has the arm to play RF. Since we wouldn't need him to even fill-in at CF (Kelenic backing up Harris and Marisnick at Gwinnett if disaster strikes), it seems workable defensively.

Canario is a guy I'd love to see the Braves take a shot on. He's no world-beater, but he's more talented than a few of the positional players we have on the 40-man. Would be a fit as a corner OF over Bryan De La Cruz (who has minor league options). He's been productive in the minors, and...

I think Robertson and his agent are in a good position to hold out for someone to get desperate. It doesn't take relievers long to ramp up for opening day, so he's got time on his side still. The only two legitimate high-leverage RPs that seem to be available are Robertson and Suarez (via trade).

Personally, I like the decision to let Morton walk and go with Holmes + 14m to spend elsewhere. Your point is well-taken that it's a gamble, but that particular gamble is one that I'd take. On the whole though, I worry about the sheer number of gambles we're making . . . Holmes + Anderson as...

Yeah, the depth situation is what's frustrating me most right now. While I am bought-in to the upside case of giving guys like Holmes and Perdomo a clear path to making the team, I do not feel that way about Ian Anderson. Couldn't we at least bring in a veteran on an MiLB deal to compete...

My recollection is that internal brace has been around for a while for position players, but it's only caught fire as a TJ alternative for pitchers in the past couple years. So not enough data to make solid conclusions, though the couple guys that I remember having it have been fine upon their...

AA on the quiet offseason. Just my interpretation . . . (1) sounds like Holmes is ahead of Anderson (as it should be), and (2) right now high-leverage RP (specifically, accounting for the Jimenez injury) is the biggest gap that may yet be closed. In any rational world, they are at least...

I would hope we manage things similarly to last year and use a 6-man rotation as much as possible to keep guys healthy and effective. We'll find out real quick with this brutal start to the schedule (7 games straight @SD + @LAD). It'll be interesting to see how they manage the AAA shuttle...

Still a lot of innings-eater SPs out there. Pivetta, Heaney, Quintana, Gibson as FAs. . . and Stroman, Montgomery, Fedde, Matz as guys who seem to be available in a trade. It's an uninspiring list, but they all probably clear the low bar of being better than Ian Anderson. If we're after a guy...
