GDT 09/16/23 Braves @ Marlins A Shuster Is As Good As A Punt

Bullpen and low baseball IQ are this team‘s 2 weaknesses that could derail their postseason journey.

    5/15: marlins game 1

Hangover or not, TDA is unplayable right now. Actually hurts just watching him.

    We’re Just Getting Started

True. Their team stats are still remarkably similar to the previous editions. They had 345 RAR, exactly the same as the Braves current total. Some interesting names on that 99 team. Lots of former and future Braves. A young Bartolo Colon. Steve Reed and Steve Karsay would go on to be traded...

    We’re Just Getting Started

The 1995 Indians had a lineup featuring Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton and Eddie Murray. They hit .291/.361/.479 as a team. They had 307 oRAR. As that was a strike-shortened season, their totals are very comparable to the Braves' running totals. The 2023 Braves are...

    GDT 9/11/23: Braves @ Phillies - DH game 2

Fast-forwarded through this one after Wright's first inning, but some of the comments here that he may have figured something out sound encouraging. Still don't think he's going to contribute anything the rest of the way, but I'd be happy to be wrong. And I realize they half-punted this game...

    GDT 9/11/23: Braves @ Phillies - DH Game 1

Good win, but Ozzie Albies has got to be the dumbest and least fundamentally sound player on any playoff team. It‘s not just the defensive blunders, but also his constant swinging 3-0 and refusal to take free walks that is going to get exploited in the postseason.

GDT 9/8/23: Braves vs Pirates - Riley rests again

The question is what he did to cut his K rate in half at his not-so-young-anymore age. Is it just a mental adjustment? Or is he, to break out the old chliche, focusing on „hitting the ball hard instead of trying to hit it far“ more this season, and it‘s costing him some lift in his swing? I...

Cardinals @ Braves Strider Is ****ing Trash

If anything can be this team's downfall in October (aside from general randomness of the playoffs), it's their low baseball IQ. Arcia swinging at the first breaking ball against a new pitcher with the bases loaded. Albies swinging on 3-0 when the Braves need baserunners. Rosario trying to steal...

GDT 9/3/23: Braves @ Dodgers - Uncle Charlie sweeps up

Result of the game doesn‘t really matter, but Riley‘s gotta stop swinging at pitches 8 inches inside in big situations. Did the same thing against SF last week (multiple times).

GDT 9/2/23: Braves @ Dodgers - Keep on crushing

Wow…this whole west coast trip has been a statement. If you compare it even to last year’s team (which struggled on the trip to Oakland, Seattle and SF around this time, I believe), it‘s a different level. Last season, September was very meaningful in chasing down the Mets. This year, it is...

    2023 Misc Braves Talk

I said this earlier in the season: I think Ozuna benefits from the rule changes in a major way. He‘s a guy who clearly has some anxiety/hyperactivity issues (maybe even worse before this season), and that lead to an erosion in his plate discipline. Quite simply, he didn‘t have the patience to...

GDT 8/31/23: Braves vs Dodgers - Third times the charm

Or: The Dodgers came up just short, despite the most lopsided pitching matchup in our favor. Yet, no reason to be negative. We beat the hottest team in baseball in their stadium, despite most of the in-game breaks going their way. And a genuinely terrible ump.

GDT 8/29/23: Braves @ Rockies - Acuña goes for 30/60

I don't know if "afraid" is the right word, but it's going to be a very difficult series. They have been playing even better than the Braves this month, plain and simple. And the Braves haven't exactly played stellar ball against them in the regular season over the past couple of years. What...

    Rome Braves 8/24 (Kyle Wright)

Maybe I remember him a tick higher than he‘s actually been. Point is, he can‘t live at 92-93. Hopefully, that goes up as he builds back strength, without losing the command.

GDT 8/25/23: Braves @ Giants - Keeping our Stride

Wow, Strider is back to 3rd in pitching WAR in the NL, per FG. I don‘t think Wheeler gets it, with his mediocre superficial stats. So if Strider end up close to Gallen, I think it‘s his. Sure helps when his offense is beating up his competition!

GDT 8/23: Charlie and the boys throw it one last time again!

The Braves clearly had the best roster in the division going into the season. The Mets have disappointed, yes, but the issues they've had didn't come out of nowhere (relying on two aging pitchers, lack of power etc.). The Phillies have met reasonable expectations: decent team, but playing for...

    Rome Braves 8/24 (Kyle Wright)

If his fastball velo doesn't get back up to 96-97, I want no part of him in the October rotation, because he's going to get shelled throwing 92-93 with his stuff. These were A-ball hitters he was facing.

GDT 8/23: Charlie and the boys throw it one last time again!

It's tough to screw up when you have this kind of talent in an otherwise pedestrian division. Snit is likely very good at the inter-personal side of his job, and at running the clubhouse (I have no insight, but there's no indication that it's not the case). That is the more difficult part of...
